1 last question. I currently carry 12 clubs. Along with the wedge, I want to get a hybrid to take care of the gap beween my 5 wood and my 4 iron. My PW is 45deg and AW is 50deg. I definitely want to get a 56deg SW, but do I need a 60deg wedge?

How do 54deg and 58deg wedges sound to you? If you insist in getting 56deg, the difference between your AW and SW will be 6 deg. IMO, distance accuracy is crucial in 100 yard and less.

As far as filling the gap between 5 wood and 4 iron, I'd look at probably hybrid 4 or 5, more importantly notice the loft and see what loft degree option available in between them. Take into consideration that hybrid will travel with launch angle lower than 5 wood but higher than 4 iron, thus factors such as wind carry, ball roll, etc. come into play.

I am in a similar situation, right now I only have 13 clubs in the bag: Driver--9.5*, 3 Wood 15*, 5 Wood 19*, 4 Iron 23*--Gap (A) Wedge 5)* and a Vokey SM 60* Lob Wedge.

I have been debating on whether to look at a hybrid 3 Iron or a 54-56* SW, or getting both and dropping the 60* becuase I am not that consistent with it, although I do like it, just gets me into trouble when I try things I haven't practiced (like trying to open the face to lob over a tree next to the green last night, popped it to the right 10 feet instead of straight 20 feet). My club distances have been improving as of late as my swing is getting better, so I am not sure about the gap betweent the 5 wood and the 4 Iron, but they seem to fall in line as far as loft goes. Anybody been in a similar situation or have any advice?

I am in a similar boat in that I am looking for a GW to complement my 46d PW and 56d SW. I currently have a 52d Cleveland GG11 Black Pearl which I cannot hit well. I am considering either a Titleist Vokey at 50 or 52d or the Cleveland CG10 or 588. Looking for any recommendations on these clubs.

hjimzaf: I have the Titleist spin-milled 56d and I can tell you that it is my favorite club in my bag. I can hit it about 80 yds on a full swing and can also finesse it. I use it a lot for chipping on downhill lies or where there is not a lot of green between the rough and the pin (obviously also use it from the sand).

I noticed that we have the same fairway woods and irons. How to you like the AW that came with the Big Bertha set? I assume it's easy to hit from the fairway, but how about for chipping and pitch shots? I was considering buying this instead of a more pricey GW from Titleist or Cleveland.

Thanks

Regarding your question about a hybrid, I bought 21d and 24d PING Rapture hybrids in place of 3 and 4 irons. I hit both of these clubs very consistently and would definitely recommend them (though they are some of the more pricier hybrids on the market). I hit the 21d about 200 yards and the 24d about 185-190. This is consistent with how far I hit a well-struck 3 or 4 iron. They are great for hitting out of the rough and inspire a lot more confidence for a higher handicapper like myself.

The BB AW is very easy to hit from the fairway. It's also good for your basic chip or short bump and run. You're not going to get any spin with this club on short pitches.

I beg to differ about the forged wedges being harder to hit - my best shotmaking ever has come through the use of my forged wedge (60 degree), including a rather unusual chip-in from the sand just today.

I see by your signature you have an adams tom watson sand wedge. I am about to purchase the 3 wedge set of tom watson adams gunmetal. How do you like the sand wedge?

I think there's last year's model, and then this year's. I got mine pretty cheap from a yard sale ($12, I think) at the end of last year, and got it regripped. I don't think there's anything particulary special about it, but that's probably more of my being a bad shot out of the bunker than anything else. I use it for full shots around 100 yards or so, and I usually get what I want out of it. The bounce on it (10 degrees) is good for softer sand and deep rough shots.

Although, I think the cheaper side of the club is starting to show - I'm getting a lot more nicks on the club than my other wedges.

If the Titleist Spin Milled is your favorite club, then I'd get a similar spin milled gap wedge. There's little difference in the two look and feel wise. I'm a big proponent of matching wedges regardless of what degrees you select.

I just purchased and played the Cleveland CG-12 black pearl 52*-56-60* wedges with the zip grooves. They spin the ball great and don't chew up the balls like the Vokey's that they replaced did. They are forged and not cast as Cleveland is getting away from the CMM material. Best wedges i've owned and that includes the Vokey's spin milled. Mizuno MP-R and MP-T, Callaway X tour, Sonartec's, Ping's and a boat load of others. If you ever played the Cleveland 588's then you are in for a treat.

Thanks, I am probably going to end up getting a Vokey 50d.

FYI: Titleist doesn't make the spin-milled in a loft less than 54d. Not sure why, maybe the grooves don't serve any real benefit on lower lofted clubs.

I ended up buying the callaway x-tour 56* and 60*. I took them to the range near my house that as a nice short game practice area. I really liked the way i was hitting the ball with them. I really fell in love with them today. I played 18 today and WOW! The grooves really eat up my HX tour 56 balls but it is worth it. I was "lucky" enough to get to hit the 56* degree out of a couple green side bunkers. It cuts through the sand like butter. The 60* with the mack daddy grooves is awesome. I was able to stop the ball on a dime from about 70 yards out. I love the 60* around the green. I think this is my new go to club for around the green.

Can the Titleist Vokey SM's be fitted for extremely tall golfers, like other clubs can be? I am 6'5" and I find most Wedges in the stores awful short for me.

Almost anything can be extended. I had my wedges and irons all extended by an inch and a half. (I'm 6'4''...I feel your pain when trying to hit wedge).

Edit: Let me guess. The toe of the club digs into the ground, and you probably push most short iron shots?

Actually, for me I am very apt to top the ball badly. Now, obviously some of that is the old standby of new player, pulling one's head early. But it also has to do with my height, the short club and my stance (somewhat upright as I have two very bad knees and am quite overweight). A longer club could (should?) help this a bit. I hope.

Your best bet is to see a pro club-fitter, but off hand I'd say to have it extended by at least two inches and have the lie angle bent two degrees upright.

(I forgot about toppers...when I had a standard length set, I also hit a lot of toppers with my shorter clubs.)

I kind of like having wedges that respond differently from my irons. Different purpose, different feel, and I think I shoot better with them because I swing em a little differently.

Couple of the guys have had cancer, heart issues and strokes but still doing the best they can. But not what they used to. Some are where they probably should just play nine holes because at about fifteen they are starting to struggle quite a bit. My scores are creeping up each year, don’t like it but it’s better than sitting in the recliner. Good luck.
