I am taking delivery of an iPad 3 shortly.  What software (free) are must haves for those of us who are range rats and non-professionals?  (If there is a thread on this somewhere else, if someone would point me there I would appreciate it and take it from there)

iPad apps...

I have Golfshot, Golfplan and Ernest Sports (free with their radar).  I've considered getting Tour Tempo - but haven't.  If there are any others out there that people use, please share.

Oh, and I have Golf Digest on my iPad and it is awesome.  I love the interactive videos, audio and features you don't see in the regular paper magazine.

Also - the great thing about the iPad is iBooks.  So you can have a book like "Stack & Tilt" and reference it very easily while you're at the range/practicing your swing.  Overall the iPad is a great device and I look forward to more companies pushing out apps and gadgets that interface with it to help improve my golf game.

Note, if you have an iPhone, I highly recommend iPing (+cradle) as well to help with your putting stroke.

+1 on Golfshot for the iPad. Good way to keep track of a lot of your statistics, and cool that it emails me a copy of the round scorecard.  Battery life is really good, even though the GPS is constantly updating; GPS is quite accurate compared to the distance markers on the course.  I use a golf cart exclusively and the iPad sits next to me.

Use the 'track shot' feature to keep me honest about just how far my various shots really do travel.

Also have a weather radar app on the iPad in case I need to see whether thunderstorms are creeping up on me.

So far I am enthalled with V1.  Granted, I paid $5 for it but coupled with the photo quality of the iPad 3...I may never leave the range.  I keep seeing things to work on.  The only thing you need to find is someone to film you...

I'm an early adopter of the iPad and I never used it on the range or the course. Just don't see the use for it.

Now if it had Trackman or was able to do 200fps, even 120fps video remote lessons, I would bring it all the time

I wonder how much golf pros would charge for remote live lessons? Probably somewhere north of the average of on-line and live lessons.

The thing about magazines on the iPad is that they are huge, file-wise. Like downloading an O/S every time.

The average Golf Digest is ~ 400 to 500MB.  About 1/2 the size of an HD movie.  But the Golf Digest app makes it easy to archive your mag - after you're done reading it - and then you can re-download at anytime.  It takes maybe 5 to 10 minutes (max) to download using WiFi on my home network.  Not bad and it is 10x better than getting the paper back version IMO.

My iPad 2 is 16GB... I don't keep many videos on it - so I have a lot of space to fit a magazine and a lot of other goodies.
