You cannot get great at putting or chipping and rely on that to score.

Couldn't disagree more. I might hit a long iron 1 time a round and a mid iron 5 times, but I will wear out some wedges. The ability to score comes from the ability to get up and down consistently from 100 yards and in. If you tell me I will miss every green but have a great short game for a given round, I'll take it because I'll be in the low 80s. If you tell me I'll hit the ball great but not putt or chip well, I'd rather go to the range because that sounds like a high 90s day.

You are so right. On the typical par 4, if you were to play it in regulation, 50% of your shots would be on the green. Every shot counts, but the guys who can chip and putt are the ones who score.
