Yardage Advice Rule?

I know it's against the rules to flat out ask a playing partner "what did you hit there?" or "what are you hitting?".

However, what about a player (or a player's caddie) glancing in the bag of the opponent to see what club is missing?

Or what if the opponent (or opponent's caddie) unsolicited says...."should've hit the 9" or something along those lines?

Glancing in the bag is totally legal.  Just don't touch anything.  If they drape their towel over the clubs for example, you are out of luck.  FWIW, I never understood why anybody would want to do this unless your opponent is an exact clone of you.

And I believe that if the opponent is just talking to the air and not directing it at you, it might be considered ok, but that's a grey area.  I could see unscrupulous players taking advantage by pretending to be thinking out loud when in fact they are only saying it for your benefit (read: detriment)  As in ... "should've hit the 9 iron" ... when in fact, he did hit the 9 iron. That would be illegal.
