I like just a few miles North of Boston and love to travel a bit to tee it up. Any good suggestions? What should I be adding to this list? Public only please...

1. Bellgrade Lakes Golf Club

2. Sunday River Golf Club

3. Red Tail Golf Club

4. The Ledges

5. TPC Boston (Tee it up program so its possible to pay a green fee there)

Well I am in western Ma (The Berkshires) and there are a lot of nice courses around here. Taconic Golf Course in Williamstown, Ma has been rated one of the best in the country. I am a member of Skyline Country Club in Lanesboro, Ma and that is pretty nice as well. Very woodsy course. I doubt you would want to travel this far but if you do, Taconic is definitely a must.

Shaker Hills in Harvard, MA, is pretty good. I'll add more as I think of them.

In my bag:

Driver: Titleist TSi3 | 15º 3-Wood: Ping G410 | 17º 2-Hybrid: Ping G410 | 19º 3-Iron: TaylorMade GAPR Lo |4-PW Irons: Nike VR Pro Combo | 54º SW, 60º LW: Titleist Vokey SM8 | Putter: Odyssey Toulon Las Vegas H7

Shaker Hills went bust in Feb. and was subsequently auctioned off. Not clear when (or in what form) it will reopen.

Really? I haven't played there in a few years, my bad. That's a shame.

Portsmouth Country Club is nice, you pass it on the way to Ledges pretty much.  Atinkson Country Club in Atinkson NH, right off 495, barely over the MA/NH border.  It's a little west and not quite north, but Wachusett Country Club is really nice and worth the drive.

Granite Links (Quincy MA)

The Pinehills - Jones and Nicklaus Courses (Plymouth MA)

The International - Pine and Oak Courses (Bolton MA)

Highfields (Grafton MA)

Shining Rock (Northbridge MA)

Butter Brook (Westford MA)

I think it's semi-private.  Non-members can go out after 10 or 11 am, something like that.  I've played there before but I didn't book the tee time so I'm not 100% sure how it works.

The International is private but you can get tee times by staying there or via BoxGroove.  I've played there and that's just an amazing course.  Best conditions you'll probably ever see, stupid long and difficult.

I will be at portsmith cc for the driver fitting next Sunday! Yay! I want to play somewhere after. Jonny have any ideas?

There's Pease International right down the street in Portsmouth.  They have a really nice grass driving range and practice area, 27 holes (although the "extra" 9 are kind of crap).  The other 18 thought are pretty nice.  Links style, lots of adjacent fairways and such, good greens, it's a fair challenge.

Down the road there's Sagamore in Greenland.  Kind of short course, a lot cheaper, usually in pretty good condition but one hole is right on 95 which is kind of strange.  If you aimed towards the highway you could drive it.  There's also a Golf and Ski Warehouse in Greenland if you're looking for a good sized shop with a grass range and trackman bays.

The Ledges isn't too far of a drive up 95 from Portsmouth, it's in Maine, about 15 minutes off the highway right over the border.

I will be at Portsmith CC on June 3. I may end up playing at Pease. They had a round of golf and cart for $34 on ezlinks. Are you interested at all if they still have the deal?

That's a good deal for Pease.  I should be around.  PM me with what time you're thinking and such.

Depending on how far you're willing to travel... there is Mount Washington Course in NH, Green Mountain National in VT, and Okemo in VT.  All beautiful mountain courses!

That is the extent of my New England area golf though.

Great courses!

For some decent public courses on the south shore and cape add Riverbend, Hingham CC, Atlantic CC and Achushnet River Valley CC to the list!

This is such an old and defunct thread, but I read that Shaker was reopening this year. New clubhouse, plus course renovations.

    • No rain while I was out (9am to 11:30am). Fairly pleasant for a late November day in the Mitten.
    • Day 56 - 2024-11-25 Did the BAD Challenge and hit a bunch more other little shots. This was one of the closer shots.
    • 70 today. The number looks good but, the course is a par 67 (5,110 yards, 64.3/115.). While the 70 took quite a few good shots to achieve, I am not counting that as shooting my age.
    • Played our town’s executive course this morning. Everything is closing but for now Huron Hills remains open. #13 is shaped like an upside down backwards L (dogleg left). Only 231 yard par 4. Dogleg has a tree guarding the corner and a sand bunker guards the green for those cutting the dogleg. Tiny green. About 10 years ago or more I would try to cut the dogleg. The hole is so short that even if one tangled with the tree or was bunkered, par was likely and birdie was still on the table. Now in my 70’s, I just hit it straight and try to wedge it close for birdie. Today I screwed up and pulled my drive. I wandered around a bit when my ball was not in the bunker. Finally located it on the approach to the green. Almost chipped in and tapped in the 2 inches for birdie. Best unintentional shot of the week. 😲
