I am currently playing a taylormade burner 10.5 with regular shaft. On a good day I can tag it for 245 yards or further (on a really good day).

I tend to hit my drive with a slight left to right fade of 5 to 10 yards.
However since the start of this season I am hitting 225 with a lot of slice.

I am thinking of switching back to my 12.5 taylormade burner driver, which is what I had when I started playing golf 5 to 8 years ago.

The problem with using the 12 degree is my launch angle is 16 degrees. When you combine 16 degree launch angle with a 12 degree driver I get major league air.

Even with the 10.5 people marvel at height I can send a ball. Unfortunately it goes high not far.

I am  a bogey golfer so I am not looking for a 300 yard drive. I just want to play in my fairway.

I have a medium swing speed and I loose my fade the shorter the club gets. My wedges and short irons still going really high in the air.

I went and took a lesson and the teacher (uselss) spent the entire time talking about concentrating on rolling over my left knuckles and never addressed I was collapsing my arm (which I figured out on my own later).

So can I cure this with switching back to a 12.5 lofter driver?

Should I just start hitting my 15 degree 3 wood (which I fade, not slice)

Should I tee the ball up higher? (currently keept about an 1/8 of an inch above the driver head!

Should I move the ball forward in my stance to my outer left foot. I currently put it on the heel of my left foot.

I also play bridgestone E6 and have cut down on my backswing to keep from over swinging.

Any ideas?

So you have a swing issue which you already know how to "fix", yet you took a lesson and then ignored the teacher's advice because your "fix" works better.  Now you still have the same problem.  Me thinks you need to listen to the golf professional a little better next time.

@ Mr3Wiggle

Maybe I did not explain it as clearly as I thought.

I have an issue slicing. I then took a lesson. the instructor tweeked my grip (which has worked wonders) but also worked on concentrating rolling left knuckles over.

Then while I was practicing later (the PGA pro gives you a bucket of balls to go work on what he showed you), I realized why I was hitting everthing off the hosel, I was collapsing my arm.

But thanks for you advice!

For the record, I don't think rolling your knuckles is the right advice either. The clubface is already pointing left of the target at impact. Your path is just even farther to the left.

I developed a slicing problem this year...a bad one.  I can tell you that I took one lesson early last week and my slicing problem is practically gone except when I occasionally go back to my old take away.  I have other issues and my driving is not real consistent but it's already much improved.

For the record, I have been going back and forth between a 10.5* driver with stiff shaft and a 13* with regular shaft.  At the moment, I can hit both but I seem to be better with the 13* except that I will hit it too high sometimes.  I think this is an issue with my weight shift and follow-through which will be the focus of upcoming lessons.  The point is I'll let my instructor figure that out.

Lessons will be money better spent.  It can be hard to find a good instructor that you can connect with.  Find a PGA instructor that actually likes people and teaching.  My current instructor teaches full-time and runs clinics in NY all summer and then goes to Florida and teaches all winter.

My grip needed work, as did my take away and weight distribution. All which the PGA pro worked on.
The problem is I have a thousand swing thoughts during my swing and I am severly neurotic with bouts of OCD when it comes to my swing.
I was taking lessons from 1 teacher who has since "left the game". I enjoyed this instructor and all his tips worked and clicked with me. The new instructor differs from what my old teacher taught. Now I am faced with "teaching an old dog new tricks".  Not to say none of this works, but it is tough to make the changes while in the middle of your golf league. But Golf is about learning and repatition.

I am going to the range this weekend. I am going to work on my grip, take away. Tee height (teeing it up higher) and moving the ball much forward in my stance. I will trade between my 10 and 12 driver and see if any of that works.

    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
