I've been Playing Golf for: 1 Year and 3 Months.

My current handicap index or average score is: 93

My typical ball flight is: Pull or Slice or Pull Slice

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Fade/Slice

I figured I'd post the links to this website where I've loaded my swings from my iphone, because you can use slow mo by just using the 6 little bars on the bottom right. And it's kinda a pain to upload it to youtube haha.

Anyway, I just recently have started to slice my driver again. I did when I was just starting out, then I was either hitting them straight, or baby fade, or big hook. But now it's either a pull fade, fade, or full out slice. And every once in a while I'll hit a dead pull, when I over correct. Anyway I can see the quality isn't that great, I can see if I can upload them to youtube if you guys want and maybe that will help. I actually just might take some new swing videos. Let me know what ever you guys need, thanks for the help!

You're just a little "out to in" in the downswing. You can see it in the DTL one.

The entire downswing plane is just a little off.

Not a bad swing at all except that.

Ok so that's the reason I am slicing it? So how do I get more in to out path? Any drills or tips? And also I noticed that I may be a little outside on the take away, if I come away more square, or even a little inside, what would that result in?

I looked at both vids and for a tall guy you have a pretty darn good swing.  I am tall too so I can relate.

I would try to stand just a little bit closer to the ball at address.  The reason I say this is because for a tall guy you have a relatively flat swing.  Your backswing should be more up over your shoulders and I think if you stand a little closer to the ball you'll automatically have a more upright swing.  At the top of your swing it looks like you are starting to "cast" the club as you start your down swing which is bringing your right hand into play too much thus creating the over the top that you are experiencing.  Honestly, I think it is a minor adjustment and you will be peppering the ball.

Yeah it's definitely tough to be 6'4" AND have a controlled swing, but I've been working at it. And yeah I have never tried that, so I'll see how it goes at my next range session. Also, what exactly do you mean by "cast"? And one more thing, will this help my slice? If not, what will? And what is causing it?

By casting I mean releasing the club too early. If you look at the top of your swing, when you start the down swing instead of keeping your wrists cocked and having your left hand pull the club through, your right hand starts pushing and you begin to lose the 'angle'...this is definitely the reason you're swinging "over the top" which in turn gives you the outside-in approach to the ball and creates the slice.

Oh ok that makes sense. And yeah I can see that on the video. This might be a reason I'm losing a lot of distance too. Wow now I can't wait to check out the range haha. Anyone else have anything else to add?

Just found something that may be a problem. My coach has warned me about doing this, he calls it "chicken winging". It's where you try to manually square the club face through impact, and the face doesn't turn over naturally in your hands and forearms, so your left arm instead of being relatively straight after impact, (which it would be if you let your arms to the natural motion of turning over) is now bent out awkwardly, into a chicken wing. And since you are trying to manually square the face, it is typically left wide open. Anyone have any opinions on that?

Look how my left arm is bent out, is this my problem?

Exactly! The chicken wing comes from your right hand/arm becoming to active or dominant in the swing as mentioned earlier. Really concentrate on pulling you club through the downswing with your left side.

Ok here's my swing from yesterday, anyone see any improvements? I tried really hard to get rid of the chicken wing thing, but I couldn't get it completely. I guess that will just take reps. I think I helped my problem with casting a little bit, because it wasn't slicing as much, and every once in a while there would be a hook. So I think I just need to zero in on it. Also I tried moving closer to the ball, but it just doesn't work for me. I constantly mis hit the ball. I couldn't get the right depth, I would always hit it fat or thin.

Definitely looks better. Another thing you may want to try is standing more upright. Your knees are bent pretty far...maybe if you stand up a little straighter you'll be able to move a bit closer to the ball...you are definitely making progress though. Good job!

Fixed the chicken wing I believe. I played 18 yesterday and I was drawing it all day. Although about 30% of the time it would be a pull or a hook, which I think was a result of coming too much from the inside. And then once I started making the changes less drastic, I started fading it again, but at least I know what my problems are, and I just need to do some reps and zero in on the feel I need throughout my swing, and then bury it in my brain haha. But on the 17th tee box I knocked one straight as an arrow 260-270 down the middle of the fairway, and I know some people say one putting from 20 feet for a birdie, or stopping and approach shot on a dime next to the hole from 150 out are the best feelings in golf, but I don't think you can beat a perfect drive haha.

Also I played around with how early/late I start my lower body compared to upper body, and the sooner you start your lower body, the more you fade, so I think I should keep my inside to out path, because if I'm gonna hit anything I'd like to draw it. And then also transition my lower body a little sooner, so I don't have those nasty hooks. Thoughts?

UPDATE

Ok I've been working on it for a few weeks, and today something clicked. I was hitting 80% of my drives dead straight, 240-260. What is different? I've been looking over my old swings and I can't really tell. What did I do today, that is different than the previous videos? Because I don't want to go to the range in a couple days, and find out that all that work is gone, so I would love to know how I fixed it. Can anyone tell? Also, anyone have any opinions on the new swing?

Yes, I can tell.  You are no longer casting like you did.  Your left hand is now pulling the club through impact as opposed to your right hand pushing your club through.  It also seems as though your hips are clearing earlier which I do believe is giving you the left hand pull type follow through.  You're holding your angle longer and I'm sure this is giving you much improved distance.  Nice job!

    • Day 329 - More full swings, focusing on the finish. Started with half swings, finished with full swings.
    • Day 146: mirror work again. Working on the same backswing stuff.
    • Didn’t get back to a decent routine in November and December as planned.  I really need to get up earlier and get to the 7 am CrossFit class… but I’m too tired. Right now getting in 3 times a week. Going to get some swing speed exercises in too.  January-April should be Monday - Friday, load up on supplements too.
    • “The stuff legends are made of…” 😁 As long as OEM’s keep replacing them…. But if it cracks 2 years in, you’re screwed on the warranty. the Cobra Dark Speed driver gets rave reviews.  Haven’t heard of breakage issues.  Taylormade now came out with the Qi35 heads.  Absolutely stunning but it’s a carbon fiber sole as well as the face and crown.  I guess we’ll see.
    • Day 71 - 2024-12-10 I spent three minutes trying to figure out when someone started calling me Yoda, even though he remains the only person to call me Yoda… then in a hotel room, I spent ten minutes while watching the 2019 Masters on YouTube (the TV doesn't have Golf Channel) working on my wrist conditions.
