I'll be covering/blogging about the US Open for The Sand Trap this week.  It's going to be a lot of fun!  I've played the Lake course many times because it's the home course for the University of San Francisco, where I went to school.  There has been some major changes and I'm excited to get out and see the course for the first time in six years.

On the agenda is to get A LOT of pics of the players, the course and random fun stuff.  Give you guys an insight or some different views you may not see on TV.  I also might take some time to film a couple swings I have three cameras with me and the batteries are charging as we speak.

Is there anything specific you guys want to see from Olympic?  Anything you might want to know? Might have a few of these as well...  Erik, I'll fax one to you, that will work won't it?

First of all, congrats on going to a major! And thanks for being our inside man!

What days will you be there?

Only thing I'm interested in hearing/seeing is how these guys plan on implementing their course management on this track. I'm sure we're going to see a real variety in club selections off the tee, etc. Curious who's got brass balls on the tee boxes, and who's playing it safe.

1.) Please take some photos/videos of the rough.

- Maybe toss a golf ball down and show it's lies in various cuts.

- Give us mere mortals an appreciation for how nasty it is if you find yourself outside the fairway.

2.) Take some photos of #4 and #5.  Those two holes sound beastly.

- Comment on how you have played these holes in the past (clubs hit off the tee, and yardages/clubs hit on the approach).

- Talk about what you see off the tees and lines/points your taking on the approach.

3.) I'd like to see more photos of the grounds - around the clubhouse - inside/outside, etc.

Thanks for offering to give us behind the scenes access!  The course looks awesome and I can't wait to watch it!  Unfortunately I'm in a trade show all day Thursday in Vegas... Then, traveling to Florida on a red eye to arrive Friday and will be with family on Sat/Sun for a wedding... Then flying back to Socal on Sunday night.  So I'm not sure how much time I'm going to get to watch it?

Yes, I wanna see the rough also, after hearing so much about it.

Also, lots of pics/video of the first 6 holes would be great. And 16, I really wanna see 16.

I know it's not golf related, but the Golden Gate and anything interesting outside of the ropes. San Francisco is one of my favorite cities, there's nothing like it.

Weather.  How cold/wet/windy does it really feel for the guys teeing off at 0730?  I've always found it interesting how cold it can be there in June.

I would also like a fax of that burger please.  Is that specifically an Olympic Club thing?  That woman in the video is dressed as if she's working concessions at AT&T; Park.  Either way, looks delicious.

First time I ever went to SF - it was over 4th of July.  The wife and I (we were engaged at the time) flew in from Chicago for a week long getaway where we would go from Norcal to Socal over the course of the week.  We thought we were going to be able to wear shorts and short sleeved shirts the entire trip. Wrong.  It was so cold in SF - we ended up needing pants and jackets/sweaters.

We only stayed in SF for one day (vs original plans to be there for 2) because it was so cold and we didn't have the right gear.  We ended up heading south down Hwy 1 a day earlier than we had planned.  I haven't been back on vacation since.  Many times for work - but just in and out trips.

One of my lifelong best buds has lived in SF for almost 10 years now.  I used to always visit him every year between June and August--great way to escape from 100+ degree heat in Texas and Georgia.

OT--BTW, one of my all-time favorite courses is in your backyard:  Pelican Hill Ocean North.  I've played it only once, and is at the top of the list of courses I'd love to play again.

Reminds me of the quote: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."

I couldn't remember who actually said it so I googled it and learned ... nobody!

It's usually pretty cool along the coast, which is where Olympic is. It's interesting how different the weather can be for a fairly small strip of land. Along the coast, it can be in the 60s and when you head east towards downtown it can be in the 70s or even 80s. I live towards the coast and TPC Harding Park and Olympic is a mere 10 minute drive so cooler weather is fairly common. This week, however, should be fairly warm, if you call high 60s to mid 70s warm. I'm guessing long sleeves in the morning but you can probably go without towards midday.

Unfortunately, I haven't been to Olympic nor will I be able to go to the US Open this year, which is a shame since it's practically in my backyard. Just pictures of the course would be great.

Best Regards,
Ryan

Yeah - I just moved here in the Summer of 2010.  Haven't even played either of the courses - North or South.  But I'm definitely going to play one on my birthday this September.  Just not sure which one.  From what I have seen and read, the North is more demanding.  But the South has more beauty given it is closer to the Pacific?

Pretty funny quote.  I've never heard that.  Hahahah

Unfortunately - I've spent some pretty cold winters elsewhere!  5 winters in Chicago was enough for me.  One New Years Eve we had family in to visit.  Had a nice hotel reservation downtown at the 'W'... Went out to dinner at Gene and Gorgettis (fantastic steak house) - and tried to walk around to show off the city to my brother-in-law and his wife.  It was so dang windy and cold (20* F with sub zero wind gust) - we ended up going back to the hotel early.  We were in our rooms by 10 and watched the ball drop on TV.  Lame! Hahhaha

Good possibility, will probably visit my Aunt and Uncle later in the week and they live in the Marina, Golden Gate is close by.

I got some good video of us visiting the Callaway tour van.  I also get access to the player's locker room but it didn't feel right to take pictures, gotta play it cool lol

I wasn't there at 7:30 today, 9 actually, and can say it was much warmer in the morning than the late afternoon.  Which is pretty typical.  That chilly breeze starts to come in around 4/4:30.  Even though the sun's out it was pretty cold.

If you could get some views from behind the tee boxes to show us what the pros are looking at, that would be cool too.

Have fun.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
