Since I just joined I thought I'd include my short golf life. I am 19, just started playing golf last year. My uncle gave me his spare set of clubs once he bought a Callaway set. The set he gave me was 10.5 Maxfli driver and 3,5,7 woods. 3-pw Mizuno tour xp, the putter is an off brand not quite sure about it. Anyways he asked me if I wanted to try to take up golf. I said yeah and we went to the field next to his house and tee'd up a ball asked me to hit. Well to let you know at this point I've never hit a golf ball in my life. The first 5 swings I completely missed, then hit a couple that went straight up and came back down. Finally the first ball I made solid contact with hit his neighbors roof. Well the house is nearly 300 yards from the field we were hitting in. I swear my uncles jaw hit the ground haha. :-D First time I ever played a round I shot a 108. After couple months of practicing I got under 100 for first time in probably 6 rounds I was really thrilled haha. Anyways I can crush a ball the longest I ever drove a ball was around 340 yards by our buddies golf gps one day play but havnt hit that again. But I do average about a 305 yard drive. Now just couple months ago I bought brand new clubs. Nikes. Driver: Nike VR-S 9.5 degree 3 Wood: Nike VR-Pro Nike VR-S 2 (18 degree) hybrid Nike VR cavity back irons (4-9) Nike VR cavity back wedges (PW, AW, 60 degree) Nike Method Concept Putter I have played 2 rounds so far with the clubs and absoultely love them I shoot around 80 now. But I have been stuck on what club to buy next to have a complete 14 club set. I have been stuck between another Hybrid (love the hyrbid its my go to club if struggling with driver or wood) or maybe a higher degree wedge. I would love to have some other thoughts to make this decision easier. Thanks!!

I'd probably buy a driver that allowed you to hit respectable distances. You wouldn't even be in the top 10 on the PGATour with an "average"of only 305.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I voted for the 68 degree wedge.  Let me know how far you hit it on full out swings.

Other - a quality sand wedge.

Buy a new bag for those nice shiny clubs and treat the uncle to a round of golf.

I've bought a couple rounds before for my uncle haha. Also I already have a nice shiny bag for the clubs I carry the Nike VR tour bag haha.

I actually rarely play out of bunkers maybe one hole per round. Biggest problem I have after driving is either hitting the far back of the green of slightly over shooting it. But when I have played out of the bunker I normal just hit it out with my 60 degree.

    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
    • Day 580 - 2026-05-04 Played eight holes. Sometimes golf kicks you in the nuts. 😉
