I've been looking and I found a lot of these thread, but none that were looking for a ball in the same category as me (in the present time, swing speed, handicap, etc). So here we are again. I'll make it easy.

Me:

  • 7-8 Handicap
  • 108 MPH swing speed
  • I like my low-mid trajectory

Balls I like:

  • Pro V1
  • Pro V1x
  • Nike One Tour D

Why change?

  • Price. Need ~$30 or less brand new, not $50-60.

I want brand new because shipping charges from used ball sites is so high I may as well buy new. Any suggestions?

Try some Srixon Z-star's. I know they are $45 at the store but you can get them on ebay for $25-30 a dozen if you buy several dozen at a time. I got 4 dozen for $90. I really like the Nike tour D ball, wish they hadn't stopped making them.

Presents me with the same problem, shipping. I can't afford to buy more than one dozen at a time right now.

So you want a premium ball at a non-premium price? I'd suggest looking at some of the "poor-man's" pro-v1's.

Top-Flite Gamer v2  - very nice 3 piece ball, not quite as spinny around the greens but very good- about $20

Wilson FG Tour - $25 -

Wilson Duo - two piece but long and really soft. decent spin around green. $20

Wilson Zip 302 - These are last years ball and are being blown out at $25 in 24 ball pack. I believe the Duo replaces it. Found a deal on these at the PGA Superstore for $15 for 24 so I stocked up

You MUST try the Callaway Hex Chrome. It is one badass ball!! Closest thing to a ProV1x.

It's very long, I mean really really long. Soft feel around the greens and putter. Decent spin off mid-short irons.

I tried these for the first time about 1 month ago, and I played the NXT Tour's exlcusivly for the last 5 years.

You can get them for about $33/doz. (I'm sorry Titleist I hope you understand)

Do you have any < 10 handicap friends who play them with higher swing speeds? I am really considering the NXT tour. I played the Callaway Tour i(s) a while back and it wasn't bad, but it's $45 as well. I wonder how the hex chrome compares with that.

You can get last year's version of Bridgestone B330 from Golf Galaxy for like 27 bucks now. I've been stocking up.

For those companies that come out with new variants of balls every year, definitely check them out. Even Titleist sometimes drops prices of their older balls, but that's a rarer situation than Bridgestone who made sweeping changes on their ball design this year.

And my swing speed with driver is 105MPH. (just not as accurate as you).

The new Nike 20XI-X balls are $30 a dozen here now, but from what I hear they suck. People are saying Nike really missed the mark with this one. Can anyone else attest to that? If they aren't as bad as people claim I'd give em a try. I wish I had a golf galaxy near me. I only have Academy and my local pro shop at the course, which is limited.

The Top Flite Game V2 is a low priced 3-piece ball with adequate spin on the green (not like a Pro V1, but better than any other ball in its class) and costs $20 or so.  I see some people on eBay selling for $14 or so a dozen so they can be had for a steal until they only go to Golf Galaxy and Dick's, who bought the Top Flite brand from Callaway and likely will make it just another house brand.

Top Flite makes range balls. That is the only way I can look at the brand. I don't think I could ever have confidence in a Top Flite ball.

They've changed that. They still make some low end rocks, but the Gamer series has been admired by many. They're a solid mid-priced ball and feel nothing like range balls.

The Gamer V2 is a good a ball.  IMHO they are the best their price range.    Are there better balls than the Gamer?  Sure.  But they typically cost $10-$15/doz. more.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
