Just how bad is that? I am now a 22 handicap, so is it my putting that is really killing me? I am just wondering what a "decent" number of putts per round is for someone in my range...

Regardless of how many putts is "decent" for somebody in your handicap range, it's clear you could improve your average score and lower your handicap index just by improving your putting. Say, if you could reduce your putts to 33 per round, you'd lower your average score by five strokes. My guess is that you could also make a big improvement by improving your chipping. Good luck.

And the end of a hole and the end of a round, the important thing is not "how" but "how many"

Oh yes, I know I need to improve my putting for sure, I was just wondering what numbers others, especially others around the same handicap as me, shoot...

I am really working on accelerating the utter through the ball on my putts because I tend to leave them short, nothing worse than leaving a 15 foot birdie putt 5 feet short!

My chipping is ok, not great, but not that bad really...

Since my index is 13, I don't guess my numbers would help you, but just in case it might, I average about 32.5 putts per round. Just this year (@45 rounds) I've had a low of 25 and a high of 39 .

Thanks, that does help me out, I know that shaving off 5-6 putts per round will make my scoring way better, obviously...

Right now I really want to get into sub 36 putts per round, so my goal for this Summer will be saving around 3 putts per round to get to an avg. of 35 or so... I think that is realistic...

36 is the classic number because its 2 putts a hole. though most people have putting averages around 1.8~. which is around 33 putts a round. If you can get to 33 putts a round you are doing pretty good.

I'm usually around 30-34, with an occasional 28 or 29 thrown in.

I'm in the same area 35-42, though I've only recently started to track fairways, greens, and total putts. It's definitely an eye opener when you realize how many strokes are lost in that last 40-50 feet. I don't have an official handicap, but based on some free handicap tools and now 9 rounds of golf I'm playing to about a 20.

I average just over 32 putts per round. I generally have more 1 putts than 3 putts, and occasionally get that much loved zero putt

Anything from 36 on down is quite acceptable... more than 36 means that you need to practice, and maybe take a putting lesson too.

My old high school golf coach used to tell us "If you want to have less putts per round hit your approach closer to the pin"

There is a lot of truth to that though -- if you improve your approach and chips and hit your approaches to within 10-15 ft. of the pin and chips to less than 5 ft. then your average putts per round will almost certainly come down.

Me, I'm averaging right at 33 putts per round but my last 4 rounds have been at 30-31. Better chipping has been the cause of that.

I average about 40. Some days I'll get it down to 35, but days like today, I was on course for well over 50, if I played 18 holes.

I've accepted that my short game isn't worth a shit.

The typical hole of my golf game goes as follows: Imagine it's a 400 yard par 4.

1. Drive the ball 250 yards down the middle of the fairway.
2. Second shot either short of the green because I hit it on the toe, or to the right because I pushed it, or it might actually be on with a monster putt coming up.
3a. If I missed the green, blade the ball off the other side of the green.
3b. If I hit the green, putt and leave it either 15 feet short or 15 feet long.
4, 5, sometimes 6. Three or four putt.

How the hell are you off 15 then? I usually have around 30-36 putts. I get a fair few 1 putts due to chipping being the best part of my game.

Shot a 75 with 29 putts, the rest of the story is on five greens I was on the fringe and used my putter to get close enough to have a 1 putt green. You need to chart your game and find where your loosing most of the strokes, it's not just putting.

Chipping does help you get closer to the hole and makes putting easier, but doesn't make you a better putter, just your stats lol. Practice your putting stroke and you'll do just as well as if you practiced chipping more.

The struggle continues!

41 putts yesterday

It is a real mental block right now, I need to really get it together... I am thinking about buying a new putter (I know that isn't a magic cure, but I am just using a cheap Top-Flite putter anyway...)

I actually use a cheapo 10 dollar putter from boscov's. Its not about how much the putter costs, but how it feels, and can you create a repeatable swing with it. Go for feel, if you think your putter lacks feel try some different ones. You could even try the long putters, some people find success in that.

Oh man, a long putter?!? I could never use a long putter...

I love the new commercials where all of the golf folks are in a conference room (it is for some hotel) and they are talking about the belly putter and Frost says there should be a rule that you have to have a belly to use the belly putter! I agree!!

    • Hopefully this one is better
    • Patrick Cantlay's strokes gained from 2024: I wonder if he takes more time on approach shots given that was the worst part of his game last season. And then here are his 2023 stats: Much better ball striking season. I wonder if there are any differences in his times between these two seasons. I tend to think he's just slow in general, but it'd be interesting to see his time differences.
    • Not sure, I think players have their own pace. Speith was always slow, regardless if he was in contention or not. Well, more so when he was in contention. It might be a push there on that question.
    • Without knowing the study at all, this could be more of a reflection of who is tournament ready and who isn't. If you have a quick trigger, it could mean your swing is working really well. Fidgeting, lots of rehearsals, maybe means your swing's not functioning as well as you'd like it to and you need more time to feel it all out before you hit your shot.
    • A study done by the European Tour shows spending less time over the ball produces better shots.  This makes sense. I can see where if you are over the ball a long time you lose the ability to make a more athletic swing. There is also the possibility of just overthinking the shot while over the wall as well and not being in the right headspace.
