Hey - question about grooves. If the USGA does end up limiting the grooves is that going to affect all of the new "spin" grooved wedges, ie CG12, Vokey SM, Callaway Mack Daddy, etc? Or would it only affect certain ones, such as CG12 but not Vokey SM. Just curious.

It would affect virtually all new wedges, yes. But it likely won't affect you unless you play super-competitive golf. I doubt as a 10.4 you will not be grandfathered in.

Both great wedges, it comes down to personal preference. personally the vokey feels better. and i think most people will agree the vokeys provide more spin and feel. i also heard the "zip" grooves on the CG12 do not live upto their hype.

I have had some experience with the Vokey Spin Milled wedges, 56.10 and 60.08 and have recently also used a Cleveland CG12 54.12 and 56.10. I really love the look of the Vokey's, just beautiful to look at. They worked pretty well for me over all, but I used them a lot in practice and it didn't take too long before some of the spin action deteriorated quite a bit and the face had a lot of wear on it. After that I switched over to the X-Tour 56 and 60PM and really liked them too, great spin on the 60.11 PM, maybe too much for some people, and they seemed to hold up better on the face wear and the spin on the 60.11 PM stayed strong for quite awhile under heavy practice. They are hard on golf balls though, even more so when they are new. I recently started using the 54 and 56 Cleveland CG12 clubs and like those very well. The CG12 54 and 56 seem to have reasonable spin, probably not as much as the Vokey's when they are new, but probably enough for most people. Performance off the fairway and around the greens is good and they seem to be fairly forgiving. As far as face wear, it is too early for me to tell how the CG12's will hold up.

The reviews I have seen on the internet for the CG12 are good for the most part (good reviews on www.tgw.com for example) but there are some who are not all that impressed with the club too. I think it is an improvement over the CG10 and 11 (although the feel of those are better probably).

The Vokey Spin Milled is a very popular and well liked wedge and has taken over the #1 position pretty emphatically. The CG12 looks like a pretty good competitor but it is a little too early for me to say if I like it better than the Spin Milled. The only negatives for the Spin Milled IMHO is loss of spin fairly quickly with heavy practice (and this may be true of most wedges anyway) and groove and face wear, and it is pretty hard on golf balls too, at least early on.

After another month or two I should be able to formulate a better opinion on the CG12.

Haha, yeah, that's what I thought. Maybe I'll wake up one day with a perfect swing! Yeah... unlikely. I was just curious. Thanks for the post E

i believe that the CG 12 still has not been confirmed by the PGA as a pga usable wedge

where as the spin milled has

the reason being for the CG 12 is that the grooves are too wide and too deep to normal standards...its still under review its not confirmed so yah bad thing about the spin milled tho is that if you play pro v1s like myself then 2 shots with your spin milled and the ball has to be tossed

Wrong. And it's the USGA who approves clubs, not the "PGA."

sorry lol it was late but have they cuz one of the pros at the golf course i play at said they havent been approved...

btw do u know if they cut up balls as bad as the spin milled wedges by titleist

yeah after 1 minute of searching... you are right

The CG12™ combines classic wedge design with advanced manufacturing processes. On each CG12™ wedge, the grooves are milled to maximum conforming dimensions using a proprietary CNC mill bit to create envelope-stretching geometry. To improve shot consistency, the new groove geometry was coupled with an innovative plating process - making ZIP Grooves™ Cleveland® Golf's most consistent, precise, and visible wedge technology to date.

I wrote a review. Read it. Short answer: no, they don't. They don't spin as much either.

the vokey series is a good wedge, as well as the cg12. they are probably the top 2 best wedges on the market right now. but in the head to head battle, titleist always comes out first..

What I think is stupid, is the fact that They don't make a 52 degree GAP wedge in the vokey spin milled.

The most popular wedge (besides a Sand)

Questioning Titleist about their offerings might be stupid. Stupid is as stupid does.

Camilo stated in Golf Digest's May issue that his 54 was bent to 53. The pic showed 54 on the sole. He's a real dumbass that's paid to play their products. He could've bent a 52 to 53, but what do Titleist engineers and tour pros know?

I have both wedges and I like the Cleveland better out of the rough and the vokey out of the fairway.. but since the Cleveland in the fairway is better than the vokey on the rough, I'd say Cleveland's better overall.

what I did was get a 54 with 14 degrees of bounce and bend it to 50 and essentially make a 50-10 and then got a 54-10 for my SW.

They really don't recommend bending cast wedges that much. It's usually a two-degree max.

Does it show signs of being a little weak? I'd watch it for awhile to make sure it's okay.

I tried CG12 56deg black pearl with 14deg (2 dots) bounce 2 days ago. It was solid club, but I'd still prefer my Vokey SM.

I have not hit either of these clubs but I do own the Cleveland CG10's and they are a good club. I prefer the Vokey's though just based on the fact that they spin more than both the CG10 and CG12 do and I like the look of the Vokey's better.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
