Am I doing something wrong?

Or are golf bags becoming increasingly cheaply made...

My latest bag is a nice looking Tour Edge Max-D cart bag...

The bag is gently used on a Bag Boy 3 wheel cart...

But after only 2 months one side of the bag is now caved in...

The bag is beginning to look twisted...

The top goes 1 direction... while the bottom goes in a different direction.

The club grips are beginning to get tangled because of the shape change.

Even the stacked ball pocket and cooler pockets go in opposite direction!

And one of the zipper pulls has already broken...

I'm disappointed as it is the exact bag I asked my son to buy for me as a gift...

Is there a way to some how 'straighten' the caved in side of the bag?

Maybe I could  empty the bag, wet it down (soak), reshape it,

fill it with rags or balloons to hold the shape until it dries????

Anyone have other suggestions ????

It was bought online but not from Tour Edge's online store...

BUT I doubt they would consider the bag as defective anyways....

BTW: this is likely my LAST 14 slot bag...

It is a big bag but the slot dividers take up so much space... everything is crowded.

My nest bag have a simple 4 or 5 zone divided top.

Also I lnow eave my hybrid head covers in the car...

just too many head covers and the irons get "lost" underneath!

I don't think that bag is one of the better made bags, but if you don't feel you did anything to warrant the damage I'd call the manufacturer and see if they will swap it out for you.

Most bags are about $200 or so, and that one's less than half the price. I think it might be a case of "you get what you pay for," but I second the suggestion to call back.

I've not had any real problems with bags by Ogio or Sun Mountain.

Years ago when I carried I would select a bag based on lightness & dual strap...

Now I use a 3 wheel cart so I can still walk the course...

Besides the number & size of pockets what should I have looked for...

I still like a light bag... no tour cart bag for me...

What construction details make for a sturdier bag?

I had figured 14 dividers, etc meant it would be sturdy...

Would weight of the bag be the best gauge of durability???

BTW You shouldn't have to drop $200 to get a durable bag....

Tour Edge in my experience isn't known for top quality bags.  The number of dividers can be deceiving as there's a difference between those that are full length dividers and those that aren't.  I'd suggest you stick with Sun Mountain for light weight bags, Ogio, or major manufacturers (Titleist, Callaway, Nike, TM, Ping).  You shouldn't have to drop $200, but most of the quality bags that get great reviews all hover around that price.  If you're lucky try to find a place that sells previous years models to save some money.

Not to pile on, but I think newtogolf is on the right path here - I have an old Sun Mountain bag that's at least 4 years old and it is in almost as good shape now as it was when I bought it, and the Ogio bags I have seen are also really durable

+1 on Sun Mountain. I've had the same bag for 10 years, and it's still in really great shape, a little faded-but it does the job.

I've owned Sun Mountain, Ogio, PING, and an RJ Sports bag.... The first three brands lasted and they weren't cheap, the last didn't and it was.

You shouldn't have to pay more than $5 to chase a ball around someone's property for 4 hours, but they never see my POV in the pro shop.

You shouldn't have to , but if you want a durable bag.....

One the other hand, if you do some research, you can find a lot of the best bags (Ogio, Sun Mountain, etc) on sale at very good prices.  I got my Ogio Vapor bag on sale at Sports Authority for $120.  If I had known I was going to get a $20 coupon from them the following week I would have waited to use that!  But for $120 I'm not going to complain, this is a great bag from one of the companies know to have a fantastic and durable product (as mentioned several times already in this thread)!

"New to Golf" Basically 3 bag questions to ask yourself... WALK?  RIDE? PUSH/PULL?

WALK

If you are going to WALK then buy a STAND BAG the type where the legs pop out to give it a tripod stance. They also are the lightest bags. And by all means look for the 2 shoulder carry strap!

RIDE.

If you will be always riding in a powered cart you can look for a CART BAG with no legs. They usually are heavier and have more pockets. If you are going to walk sometimes/ ride sometimes go for the STAND BAG with the legs. The STAND BAG will still fit on a riding cart.

PUSH/PULL

Those of use who walk but push a cart in front of us (think Stroller) have the hardest time finding bags.

You want a bag that will set well on your cart. Be sure all pockets are accessible! The CART BAG that fits well on a riding cart can sometimes be a disaster on a push cart. Sometimes they will not strap down well. Other times pockets are blocked... I've had cart straps block where my rain hood needed to be. My advice would be to go to a big box sporting goods store that has carts exactly like yours... then try bags on the carts to see what works well!

Basic bags tips...

You do not need 14 separate 'holes' for your clubs Many 3 to 5 slot bags are very convenient!

You do not need a separate putter slot out side the bag. You DO NEED LARGE POCKETS! Do not be fooled into buying a bag that has numerous small or half size pockets. BIG FULL LENGTH POCKETS are the most useful. Bags that storage balls at the top usually do not work well. In fact I usually end up with balls in the cooler pocket at the bottom. Make sure you get a good rain hood with the bag. Try the rain hood on the bag to see which way it zips... will it go over your headcovers, etc.

Good luck.

BTW My best golf bag ever was a NIKE Stand bag with a 2 shoulder OGIO strap added. Legs finally broke but that was after 5 or so years of use. Had to give it up when I went to a a 3 wheeled puch car. The shape of the bag would never tie down correctly on the cart...

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
