OK, so it happened last night - made a 9 on a par 4 .      Drive in the woods and long iron in the pond, and overshot green - total failure to execute any shot well.

I've heard for hcp scoring, worst you have to card is twice the par of a given hole.    Obviously, the pro's don't score this way ... just curious if this is how amateurs are allowed to score for GHIN hcp or do you card exactly what you shot, if it's even say a 13 on a par 4 ?   THx

It's called equitable stroke control and is based on a golfers course handicap for the course they're playing. The breakdown is as follows..... Course hcp......... Max score on any hole 9 or less. ......... Double bogey 10-19............. 7 20-29........... 8 30-39........... 9 40+. ............. 10 Again, that's the max you can POST for handicap purposes. It has no bearing at all on your actual score for the round.

As David in FL said, it based on the handicap of the course and tees you are playing. A common misunderstanding is that you use your index. You do not. As a guy who hovers around that 10 handicap number, and has had more than a few disastrous holes, it matters.

BTW, when playing with my extended group of golf buddies in our "events" we come up with our own max per hole for the purposes of the games and keeping everyone moving. Sometimes is par X 2 and sometimes it is five over par. Does not change the score you record unless you take a six max on a par three and you could have taken a seven or eight.

Using ESC for handicap, you would be allowed an 8 as your highest score (assuming that your posted handicap is correct), and that includes par 3 holes.  If you are tracking your score,t han every stroke and every penalty counts.  You only make the adjustment for ESC and return your card for handicap after the round is over and the bets have all been settled.

I am just about an 8 handicap and most my group takes (all under 10 hcp) is a double bogey. Fun times.

    • I had a few tweeks in the bag. I took out my Mizuno pro FliHi 3 iron replaced it with a Titleist GT2 7 Wood. what a change that is, so easy to hit, it goes so high without it ballooning on me. I couldn't get rid of my callaway woods ( Rogue ST Max LS ) but changed the shafts to Diamana BB 63 stiff for the driver and 73 stiff for the 3 wood. Than i got myself a new putter Odyssey S2S jailbird yes i joined the centershaft family
    • First off all i think you should use the same ball all the time. We all strive for consistency on the course, the only factor you can be sure it will be always the same is your ball if you always use the same. So i think we should always use the same. I recently switched from Titleist Pro V1x to Srixon Z-Star Diamond because it i get a bit softer feel around the greens and same results on driver and irons
