By any chance are your grips worn? Are you standing a little close to the ball? Could be because of the grips if you are.

\

My grips are fine, but i think i am standing to close to the ball and roling my wrists at impact causing the club face to open. The grass on the fairway in my game the other day was perfectly fine. Weirdest thing ive ever experienced. I was also hitting from the mats where the Ball was proped up too.

This morning at the range before I teed off for my club championship was more embarassing. I took a mighty swing, and ticked the side of my ball with the far end of my driver, leaving an ugly scuff mark where the range ball made contact, not on the face of the club. The ball squirted out nearly 90 degrees to the right, into and through a cheap wooden picket fence, and into the pack of golfers hitting balls on the other side.

At the back of our range you can go there and practise Sand and chip shots. I was even shanking my wedge that day and my friend was diagonal from me infront of me. I told him to watch out but he didnt hear me. I shot anyways and caught him straight in the back in the air. It was funny, but good thing i didnt hit him in the head.

(Kevin Costner: Tin Cup.) Try your putter, at least it's impossible to shank that.

I have topped my putter plenty of times though...

On my putter swing i was going from outside in, i hit the toe of it a bunch of times. Im turning into such an agressive putter now powering it past the hole. Nowadays im always trying to power it into the hole. Not even reading the break.

I only power it into the hole on short putts, because it's too much trouble to read breaks on a three-fotter. The problem comes when you pull or push your putt, and have a five-footer coming back.

The outside-in could be causing your shanks. Put a 2x4 about two inches in front of your ball, laid lengthwise. If you go from outside in, or inside out, the club will want to hit the board. What happened to me was, well, I was afraid of hiting the board, so I brought it straight back and straight through. It's amazing how the threat of monetary loss can fix your golf game.

Sometimes when you practice to much muscle fatigue can come into play. And when you take off 2 weeks sometimes you might be out to far or not keeping your hands in. I'd just mess around on the putting green

3 weeks ago, i got myself a bucket 45 minutes prior to tee time; apart from the first shot with a 60 deg that actually looked like a legit shot, NOTHING else even got off the ground... wedge shots were rolling 45 degrees to the left, short irons had like 10 yards carry, and i was hitting half a foot behind the ball with my long irons...

considering i was playing with player's equipment and the clock was ticking, i was extra embarassed and worried.. instead of thinking what i was doing wrong, i took my mind off of what happened at the range, went to the clubhouse and grabbed a sandwich.

when i stepped onto the first tee, i thought less of my embarassment, and more of what i usually do that produces good shots.. in the end, apart from putting 47 times, i was very decent with my irons.

i usually think less of what i did wrong, and more of what i usually do to get it right... positive thinking helps a lot.

After you do something like that you just pack up and hit the bar.

I believe the proper response to this is to hold your arms out with palms up and utter the phrase "A little help?". If you get them to throw the range bullet back to you, you know it's going to be a good day.

I definitely play better after a bad range session than a good range session. I don't know if it makes me focus more or what, but it's great when you are in a tournament and guys see you flailing away on the range and you go out and shoot a great score. I assume the term "sandbagger" is some kind of complement based on me being from West Texas?

If I am blocking my drives or flubbing I go to the bar and take 2-3 shots. No kidding

OH PLEASE....all of you "professional" types are offering solutions, and yet, not one of you has pointed out the BEST solution.

We all know, when you go to the range, you fail to properly equip yourselves.

My advice, make sure you have 3 new white tees in your right pocket. A ball marker in your left pocket, usually a quarter causes me to slice, a penney to hook, so I recommend a nickel or time, depending on if you want to draw or fade your ball (nickel = draw, dime = fade).

Also, if the shanks are really bad, I recommend tying your shoes into a double knot, but only on the left shoe, and if that doesn't fix it, remove the back left spike from your right shoe, this helps.

THAT my friends, is how you fix a golf swing!

I usually just take my ipod out and listen to anything. It takes my mind off the real problem.....me. Plus it helps me find a rythm again. Last time I had the shanks it took 6 or 7 shots and 1 thrown 3 wood before I remembered that I had to stop trying to hit the ball if I wanted to hit the ball.

Good news golfers! I went to the range today and I fixed it. Except i wasnt using my clubs, i was using my Dads new mizunos. Hopefully it wasnt the clubs and it was me. I was hitting very straight and fair. Most were right i just needed a break.

dzclarkcpa: I tried that and it helped!! Thanks so much.. im gonna recommend your teaching methods to my friends.

    • Why?  You would never be waiting on me.  I am one of the fastest players you will ever run into on the golf course.  I am extremely fit and almost always the first to the green and the first to the next tee box.  When I play with my 16 year old step son who is a 3 handicap, he tells me to slow down.  Also,  what does it take me?  40 seconds round trip to walk off 30 yards?  (which is the max I walk off)  I like to have a look at the break around the hole which helps me to hole out chips which I did for birdie from 27 yards just the other day.  I also do this while waiting on my playing partners to catch up to me so you need not worry about being irritated, I can pretty much guarantee you that you could not keep up with me on the golf course.  🙂
