Carrying a LH Club

Has anyone ever experimented with carrying a left handed club (or a right handed club for you lefties)? I dont carry 14 clubs so I was considering buying a cheap LH 7 iron and learning to play proficiently with it so I can use it to get out of a few tight spots.

I've seen people that do just that. Honestly the opportunity to use it doesn't happen often and likely wouldn't been any better than taking the penalty stroke for unplayable lie. My experience is going for the hero shot rarely results in something good.

I was taught to hold a right handed club left handed, rotate the club so the toe is down, now you have a left handed club without carrying one. At most I just take a chop at the ball this way to get it out in the open.

I don't find myself in that situation more than once a year.....if that. Even the least used of my 14 clubs is used a LOT more than that. I'll stick with clubs that I know I'll need periodically rather than carrying something I know I won't use very often at all.."

I don't need that shot very often, and when I do have it, I don't usually try to do much. Best to flip over a wedge and try to get it into the fairway. I like to just chop at it one handed, try to advance it 50 yards or so. An unplayable lie isn't the worst idea either, if it can get you on the green on your next shot. It's hard enough playing right handed, I don't think it would be for the best to try and add a whole set of mechanics for a very rare and unrewarding shot.

If I did have a LH club, I'd pick a sand wedge. I've been in a bunker against the left lip and that's not a fun place to be. The tree scenario isn't that bad by comparison.

That's how I learned to play the game, with my dad's right-handed club - would flip it toe,down & swing it left-handed.

Not quite on topic, but I played in Arizona a few years back & I played a course that had a lot of 'wash' area - rocks, cactus. The locals all carried an extra club - an old beat-up 7-iron, that they would use to hit out of those areas.

Now that's a good idea!  I live in Arizona and find myself off in the desert with some frequency and usually make another bad shot while attempting to "scoop" the ball so as not to damage my club.  Maybe that old Dunlop 7-iron out in the garage will come in handy after all.

Yes, I carry a Cheapy 6 iron and a cheap wedge for such shots, I call them my hacker clubs. I too find myself out in the desert, often. The two extra clubs brings my club total to 15, so If I ever play competitively I'll have to drop one. Most likely it would be my hacker 6 iron, because my wedges are worth more then the individual irons in my set. Plus I don't mind smashing my good 6 iron into gravel if I have to, but I'm not doing that with my Cleveland wedges :).

As for a left hand club, I don't know about that. I would just do what the other guys said, and flip my normal club over and just get it out of there. I seen it done like that on tv a few times before I ever started golfing, so I already had the idea in my head.

It's very rare that I find myself in a situation where I need a right handed club...I think it's happened twice this season and both times I believe I used my 6 or 7 iron inverted and pitched it out 20-30 yards hitting it right handed.

If the situation is right, you can try this. Certainly one of my all time favorite golf shots.
