Lost Ball- Do you have to look?

Yes, but the scenario we are talking about only exists because his ball is closer to the hole than where his original is thought to be.

Since this is a rules thread can someone answer the one about the ball that comes to rest on the green, the players marks and then replaces it and all of the sudden a wind causes it to roll toward the hole. Is it replaced to the original spot or played where it comes to rest?


It is played from where it comes to rest. If it falls into the hole it counts as if it was holed with the last stroke.

But why didn't you start a new thread. There are hundreds of threads here, each is generally about a different aspect of the rules.


"Play the ball as it lies, play the course as you find it, and if you cannot do either, do what is fair.," as the saying goes.

An honest effort to find the original ball must be made, and anyone can look, and if found the provisional must be abandoned and the original played as it lies---for no more than five minutes.

There's no requirement to look for your original ball. Please stop posting incorrect information.

Amen.  If found he is required to examine it and identify it if it is his ball, but the player is never required to search.
