So I was having a good round of nine and barely finished the 8th before it became too dark to finish. It was frankly amazing I found my ball during the 8th hole in general. Should I finish the 9th another day, take the maximum allowed for my GHIN for the ninth and post it or scrap the round?

You have two correct options. You can finish the round, or you can post a score for the missing hole equal to par plus any handicap strokes to which you're entitled for that particular hole.

So you are saying I am in trouble for scrapping the round though....

If you are keeping an honest HC....the USGA makes it clear a score must be posted in this situation, and the score you need to take on the 9th hole depends on your handicap for required posting purposes.

For example....if you are a 5HC::....if the 9th hole is the 6th-18th HC hole.....you must record a par and post the score.  If it's a 5 or lower hole handicap hole, you must record a bogey AND post the score.

It is the number 1 handicap hole and I do keep an honest handicap. I will have to find the appropriate strokes to take as per my handicap.

If it's the #1 HC hole...you need to take a bogey.   If you were a 36HC golfer....you need to take a double.......LOL

Seriously? I am nowhere near a 36 HC but a bogey seems a low score for the number one HC hole.

It's worth mentioning that the strokes to which he's entitled is based on the course handicap for his particular index on that specific course. Depending on the course, someone with an index of 36 could have a course handicap higher than that, and a triple could actually be the required score. Ouch!

I'm sure somebody will post one for me...LOL

That's how it works when posting rounds for HC purposes.

IE........if you're a 10HC and quit with 3 holes to go, you need to post the score.   If the holes left are the #2,10, and 11 HC rated holes.......you need to record bogey, bogey, par for the final 3 holes.  By the same token...if they are holes rated 11 or higher...you need to record Par/Par/par...........it's an anti-sandbagging measure that many people don't follow anyway.

It isn't rocket science.  You need to know what your course handicap is.  Given that it is the #1 handicap hole, if you are scratch you take a par.  If your course handicap is between 1 and 18, you take a bogey.  If your course handicap is between 19 and 36 you take double bogey.  If your course handicap exceeds 36, you take triple bogey.  It really is pretty simple one you get through the USGA verbiage.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

I pretty much did the right thing but could not sit through the verbiage. I honestly had just enough beer to keep me from focusing through the mumbo jumbo.
