Seems like there have been a few Penta threads, but I couldn't find the one I was looking for.  So I've been playing Penta TP for a little over a year, and I recently bought 5 dozen of the Penta TP5s.  Played them this weekend for the first time, as I finally went through all of my Penta TPs.

Holy cow.  This ball is long.

Anyone else notice a significant distance increase between the Penta TP and TP5?  I was airmailing greens all weekend.  Probably 10 yards longer on my irons.  My normal 4-iron is about 205; I had 210 into a gentle breeze to a back pin, which my ball waved at on the way over.  8-iron (normally about 162-yards) flew over the back of the 2nd, probably a 170 yard carry (lased 158 to a front/middle pin).  And this just kept happening yesterday and today.  I've never hit so many flop shots from over the green before.

I have been playing the TP5 and the original ones this year mainly.  I also played the original most of last season.  I have not noticed much of a difference.  I have been hitting them longer, but I believe it is more because of some swing changes that I have made after taking some evolvr lessons.  Before the changes I was hitting them them about same.  I am curious to hear what others think though.  Was it any unusual day weather wise?

Not an unusual day, per se.  It's Hawaii, so the weather is nearly always the same:  80 degrees, partly cloudy and breezy.  Winds were very quiet yesterday, and what little wind there was came out of the west, so that was unusual--but not in a way that would affect the ball.

I played 2 rounds, Saturday and Sunday, at two different courses.  Both are courses I play regularly, so I know pretty much every approach shot, which ones play a little longer, a little shorter, etc, and I have a laser.

I hit 16 iron shots yesterday.  8 of them were long, typically about 8 yards.  4 were more-or-less on the number, but all were expected to come up a little short.  The other 4 were mis-hits.

It was exactly the same on Saturday, except I think I hit only 3 shots pin-high:  1 was in-between clubs, and I went with the shorter one to avoid trouble long, and the other 2 were mis-hit short irons that still found the middle of the green.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
