Lie angles adjusted

I have Titleist AP2 irons from PW to 4 and LW, SW, GW separately, Vokeys. I had them fitted for me on start of this season, HCP around 22-26 at that time. We agreed on adjusting the lie angles later due to the fact that I had just started playing golf and my swing was not so consistent at that time. Now I'm around 11 HCP so I thought it would be a good time to set them.

I'm quite accurate with my wedges and up to 7 iron I shoot quite straight. From 6 onwards I struggle, usually hitting an unwanted draw or hook. I almost never slice and I can't fade the ball with my irons.

So we took some measurements and found out that I needed about 5 degs flatter irons and wedges were flatted 1-2 degs.

What a difference. The draw is gone, I can fade the ball on a good day and my longer irons actually get the ball airborne instead of a low draw / hook. On the other hand, I need to adjust my chipping, toe of the club has now a tendency to hit the ground.

What I gather is that 5 degs is quite a lot adjustment. Anybody else have their clubs adjusted this much?

I am 6'4 and got fitted for my irons and wedges to be bent 2 degrees up. I have never heard of anyone bending in either direction more than 3 degrees. 5 seems like a lot. If I were you I would go back to another fitter and ask them if the lie angles of your clubs are correct. They should put tape on the bottom of your club and have you swing on a board to find out. It is always better to have 2 different opinions just to be sure.

Re-cheking them might be a good idea. Still, they feel a lot more better than they used to so at least something has changed for the better.

Are you fairly short? Do you have a video of your swing? It is a lot of adjustment but if you have a swing address that leaving your hands low or reaching out on longer irons it may work.

Sounds as if the lie angles might have been "off" in the first place.

And now, if your wedges are hitting at the toe - they are too flat. Check your divot and see if they are deeper at the toe, or get on a lie board and see if the tape is marked towards the toe - get them a bit more upright if so...

I agree. Sounds as if the clubs were originally bent up and needed a big adjustment to get them flatter. If you're hitting your chipping clubs good on full swings but catching the toe on chips,you may need to adjust either the ball position or your stance.
