Iacas/Phil - yes, I am familiar with what JJ wrote, and what you've both referred to. So what I thought was interesting/eye-opening in that article was this:

"When you swing out-to-in with the face open, the ball doesn’t start left it starts a little bit right and goes more right’, said Jacobs."

Historical revisionism? Maybe. I'm not really in a position to judge - and Phil, if you worked alongside him, I guess you are.

I do think it's probably fair to say that JJ didn't really account for gear effect spin. It seems to me that off-centre impacts could cause at least as much if not more confusion in trying to interpret ballflight as the whole "ball starts on the club path" idea.

No, I don't think he did, but I think that the article mentions how Cochran/Stobbs wrote about the gear effect before he published one of his books.

Anyway, I tend to not care much about stuff that happened before I was born. :)

I love it when stereotypes get corroborated.

Kids these days, huh? ;-)

No. What happened in the world of golf instruction as it relates to scientific principles simply has almost no actual bearing on the modern world of instruction.

That's all. :)

To everyone who took time to read this thread or write a reply - thank you. As an educator I realize that no one can have all written material at their finger tips. Therefore, to the person who shared the 1937 pictures they were brillant and thanks! Also, I have been studying Mr. Kelley's work since 1977 and although I did not know Mr. Kelley well I am quite good friends with Don Shaw for whom he caddied over 60 times. Don would say about Mr. Kelley's statement that "the ball leaves the clubface at approximately 90 degrees to the face" is a typcial Homer thought. Since he could not verify his statement nor did he have access to high speed cameras or video a safe bet would be to say "approximately".
