As a former NIU student I enjoy the love they are getting. A great season but I am getting sick of coaches being successful then moving on to more "prestigious" programs. Dave Doeren has now left the Huskies and will coach at NC state. He will not coach the bowl game.

For sure. Darrel Hazell (Kent HC) didn't even have a clause in his contract for a bonus had they gotten a BCS berth. I'll be pleasantly surprised if he's still coaching Kent next year.

You probably saw it, but during the game they showed a graphic of how much the coaches made compared to the $1.5 million average.  One was $300k and the other was $400k.  Unfortunately for fans/alumni of small schools, money talks.

It sucks but thats the deal.  I can think of plenty of coaches who left Wisconsin for more money elsewhere too.  I try to look at it as a testement to how great the program is.  Same with NIU.  I grew up about 30 minutes north of the NIU campus (Janesville, WI), so Im well-aware of how great the program is and its nice to see the Huskies win the MAC 2 years in a row.

I understand the whole money thing, I just can't imagine leading your team, a MAC team, to its first BCS bowl and just leaving. But I suppose that is easy for me to say sitting here. Hopefully we keep proving everyone wrong and play well against FSU

Yeah, I didn't even think about the fact he isn't going to be coaching in potentially a BCS game, that is surprising.

Yup Orange Bowl in Miami. I suppose I will have to get used to it. Unless NIU really becomes a powerhouse (don't see this happening) it will remain a stepping stone for coaches

Got the email from the alumni association this morning. Kent's going to the GoDaddy.com Bowl.  While not the Orange Bowl, and congrats to NIU for getting the berth, I am still thrilled my school is going to any bowl game. First time in forty years.

I am also an NIU alum and it's great to see their success.  The Orange Bowl is a big deal!  I really hope they can compete with FSU.  The reality is, though, that they haven't beaten any good teams...their one loss was to an Iowa team that was terrible this year.

However,  NIU is clearly just a feeder school.  As others have mentioned, the money is much better at other schools...why would you stay for $400k when you can make $1M+ elsewhere?  While I agree it's a little crappy to not even stay to coach the bowl game, I definitely agree with his decision to accept a huge promotion.  It's the same thing the previous coach, Jerry Kill, did...both in coming to NIU from SIU, as well as going to Minnesota afterwards.  We do it to smaller schools just as the bigger guys do it to us.  It's all a food chain.

Darell Hazell (Kent's coach) accepted the head coaching job at Purdue. The MAC just can't keep coaches. They're a stepping-stone conference.

    • Hello Golfing Buddies, It has been awhile since I posted but I am the Retired Old Man that asked for advice because I suffered two "T.I.A.'s about switching from playing right handed to playing left handed.  I purchased a Callaway Edge Left handed golf clubs. I changed the grips to oversize grips.  Well, two weeks ago and still at 79 years old, I shot a 44 and 47 on a small course in my hometown.  I am currently changing my shafts from regular flex to Senior flex.  So, you can see' it can be done! So, you other old timers; get with the program! Blessings to all of you. Retired Old Man (Terry Warner)

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
