Kettlebell Size? and my workout

I am going to start to get golf ready and have decided to try a kettlebell. I am getting an adjustable one for my wife (5/8/12lbs) and I am going to get one for my self. I just dont know what size.

20lb, 25 35?

I am 38 and out of shape.

I am also thinking of trying the OA diet to go along with it.

Running every otherday, walking on days opposite run days. and working out 3 days a week

Figure this will be a shock to the system, aide me in dropping 20 and which will cause loss and stregnth for the season.

Also can anyone recommend a video or resource for the Kettlebell?

The wife and I love our kettlebells.  The smallest ones we have are 12kg (26#), and it rarely gets used except for her bootcamp classes she teaches.

FWIW, I'm setting aside my usual compound lifting programming and following Sean Cochran's Performance Golf Fitness program for the winter.  For the 2 arm kettlebell swings I use a 24kg (52#) bell, and a 16kg (35#) for 1 arm swings.

Out of shape?

I recommend a heart monitor. Seriously. You won't believe how high your heart will go with kettle bells. I literally had a heart attack at 55 when I started with kettle bells after not being able to work out for several months due to an injury. Before that, I had a running habit.

Start slowly.

Don't be a hero.

I suggest the Art of Strength Series - check it out on Amazon. I have Art of Strength - Providence. It works - almost killed me.

It's pricey, but you follow the intimidating looking  guy for the entire workout - the vid has bars for timing that wind down. It helps. 14 exercises - 2 minutes each, and a bonus exercise at the end. 1 minute rest in between. I skip some of the exercises. At 57, I now have larger arm muscles than I did at 40 after only several months of this workout. It is a full workout. You don't have to go the entire 2 minutes for each exercise. I still don't... and I rest more in between depending on my heart rate, which is why I strongly recommend a monitor - get one. I use a Garmin.

Weights - You might try

12 lbs for the wife, maybe something lighter for other exercises.

26 lbs for bicep/tricep work

35 lbs for swings for you - but don't be a hero - swings get that heart rate way up.

I am 220, 5'6" and 38 years old. I have always kept some weight on, especially since quitting smoking 7 years ago.

I am in shape enough to job a mile in 12 mins and walk 18, while carrying my bag, but I am sore and tired the next day. I am far from in the shape I was in 10 years ago when I had returned to playing full field lacrosse.

I am also surprised at the amount of posting I have seen on the Interwebs about Kettle bells and heart monitors!

I was looking at getting one of those 3 in 1 Kettlebells for the wife. It has adjustable discs which you put on an off to create 5lb, 8lb or 12lb. It comes with 1 dvd of 3 workouts. Anyone have any feedback on this?

Thanks for the feedback.
I just bought my wife a 12lb one with a dvd.


I have compiled some youtube vids to get an idea of a workout.

Now the problem I have is figuring out to purchase a 25lb or 35lb.
I understand that 35lb would be ideal for swings, now what if you add a swing/jerk and lift with the arms. Is 35 still the way to go?

I do have a set of 25lb dumbells for lifting.
I am just afraid if I start with the 25lb, that after a few weeks of swings I would have to go get a 35lb and that gets pricey. Or that 25 lb swing would be too easy?


Of course I am also afraid that 35lb to start with swinging is too much!


Any advice?

Yeah, get both.

And forget the youtube videos.

Get a real workout you can follow without a break so the workout is timed and the guy is working with -reminding you of form, as you go through the same workout with him.

    • Some background information before you vote... I run a weekly game on Saturdays and Sundays with anywhere from 8-12 guys. Handicaps in my group range anywhere from 1 to 16. Expected pace of play at my course is right at 4 hours. Anything more and its frowned upon. We do not get the earliest tee times of 8am, because the course does me a favor by allowing me to have standing tee times without having to call every week. We have 9:00-9:10-9:20 every weekend.  This morning we had 7 guys, so I sent off a 3some (me included) and the last 4 guys to follow. On the 3rd hole I noticed that there was a 2some in front of us on 4 tee, and one of the guys took 5 practice swings just to top his driver maybe 4 feet. It was still on the tee box. He reteed and pulled one about 60 yards left. No biggie, golf is hard no matter how good or bad you are.  The 2some was not very good, so they were having a hard time keeping  up with the 4some in front of them. I texted the assistant pro (close buddy) in the pro shop and he came out and asked the 2some to try and keep pace or let our 3some through. We waited on every shot on 4-5-6 and finally on 7 green we hurried to the 8th tee only for them to look back at us then drive off. The issue was they were waiting for the 4some to get on the green before they would tee off, and then come nowhere close to hitting it 200 yards. On the 9th tee I finally said, "hey guys, do you mind if we play through? We will get through that 4some no problem and you wont see us again" They said sorry, but the 4some is not allowing them to play faster and that they couldnt let us through. At that point I said, you're a 2some, and 2 hours for 9 holes is not on pace. You need to push the guys in front of you so they know to let people through.  At the turn the assistant pro let us through, and we played through the 4some on 11 without them missing a beat. Ended up playing in 2 hours and 55 mins, even with the hold up (all three of us shot sub 80 rounds). After the round I thank the assistant pro for allowing us to play through, and mentioned that 2 hours for a 2some was not on pace. He told me that they complained that I was pressuring them to push the group in front of them, and that he was a tennis member who they would like to join as a golf member. The assistant pro said he has been giving one of them lessons, and that 2 hours probably should be their pace. I replied with " I have no problem with anyone shooting 120 on a Sunday morning, golf is golf, but when there is a faster group behind its golf courtesy to let them through"  I dont really care what they think, and honestly if they can get around in less than 4 hours Id be glad to have them play in my weekly game. Was I wrong for pushing a group of not very good golfers?  
    • Fired up the smoker and plan to watch in about 35 minutes.  Can't wait to see this match go down.  My money is on Rory, but we shall see.........   @natureboy - How about that 133 YARD ;) wedge shot yesterday into the elevated green with the pin placement in the front.  Mortals wouldn't have a chance at that pin....
    • Not a smart bet IMO.  Just for the fact that Spieth plays so well at the Masters.  I would take that bet on all the major excluding the Masters.  No one in their right mind would bet against Spieth at the masters, 2nd, 1st and 2nd place finishes in his last 3 attempts.  Just saying.....  I believe he will win another Major, @ the Masters.  
    • Yes, some ranges with limited space use "restricted flight" balls that don't fly nearly as far as regular golf balls (60% sounds about right).
