  1. 1. Stock vs Aftermarket PW

    • Stock PW from club set

    • Aftermarket PW (Vokey, Gorge, etc.)

I just want to get some input from everyone else...

What do you guys prefer? Using the stock PW that comes with the set.

OR

Using a aftermarket low degree wedge (47*) like a Vokey or Gorge wedge?

I personally use Ping i20s and am seriously considering dropping the stock PW for a 47* Gorge.

I like the stock PW option personally, with a weak loft. If you want a weaker PW without bending go ahead and buy a wedge, but I like the cavity. The full and punch shots will be greeted with more forgiveness, and you can use your other wedges around the greens. A shaft matching that of the irons should help you with a consistent flight, and let you swing solidly. Aftermarket wedges that strong tend to chew up balls unnecessarily, IMO. Wish I could get a versatile sole grind on my set wedge, though. There are times I open it up but need less loft.

Plus they're a lot cheaper usually.

I guess it depends largely on what the PW that came with the set is like. I really like my wedges to be muscle backs. My PW that came with set is cavity back and not much bounce, whenever I have the extra cash or a super deal comes along I'd like replace it with a blade but it'll have to stay for now.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

Some people will dump the stock PW if they're trying to pick up 6* loft gaps early and go with just three wedges.

Let's say your 9i is 42* and the stock PW is 46*. If you go with specialty wedges at 48*, 54* and 60* you can get by with just three, and have even yardage gaps.

I have Ping irons and kept the PW, which I really like, but purchased different 52*, 56* and 60* wedges. For my wedges I like the feel of forged wedges.

I extended my G20 set by adding the S and L wedges to the P and U. This wedge configuration should give me more forgiveness than blades. I also like having the same shaft and red dot lie throughout the entire set.

My Titleist 735s came with a great pw that was 47 that I bent to 48. It is a blade and I have played a lot of cool shots with it. There is no need to go Vokey on this one unless I got bored. I do get bored quite easily so don't put any thoughts in my head...hmm!

    • Agreed. He’s probably the biggest name now that Tiger’s not around, and he’s been a fun player to watch all these years. I really hope he gets the jacket one day. Ugh, I could do without those two doubles. Good tee shots, then missing greens and not getting it done with the wedges. At least he didn’t dunk two like Cantlay, but four dropped shots in three holes is rough. He’d been going at it very well up to that point. The greens seemed very quick yesterday, as many on the course reported. As for Rory and The Masters, it’s 50:50. He’ll either win one or not, but ruling out the 35 year old world number two is just silly. This “super buffed” talk reminds me of when Tiger got some muscle and people thought he was huge. He wasn’t and Rory isn’t. You don’t have to gain a lot of muscle before it shows, especially in tight fitting t-shirts. He’s got the game to win it. Just have to make it work those four days and not let his head get in the way. Winning professional tournaments is difficult. Winning a major is even more difficult. The good news for Rory is that The Masters has the weakest competition of the majors. The top players are all there, but it’s a smaller field than the other majors.
