How to analyze your swing on video

I have started to record my swing and I first noticed that I was coming back way to far inside on my backswing. I have started to fix this and it is starting to be evident when I record my swing again. But my question is, Is there a guide on what to look for? Like how to draw lines on the video to see my swing path, etc? I would like to learn how to fix my own swing by video but dont know what all to look at. Is there a book or a video tutorial that I can watch that will help me? Thanks

But really, golf instruction has to be a major part of your life in order to understand which faults you attack and in what order.

Your best bet as a self-teacher is to study the golf swing like crazy, but even that is difficult because there are so many places in which instructors disagree over how to proceed. So I would supplement your studying with quality instruction:

I'd highly recommend trying evolvr because you will get to work with instructors who know what they're doing, in my opinion. Juxtapose what they say with what you yourself see and see if both opinions correlated. Obviously, you should listen to them, but evolvr is a great way to understand how to analyze your swing too. And the cost is very affordable.

As an amateur, I study swing mechanics a lot. But I get stumped constantly when looking at my own swing. It's not for lack of trying or lack of intelligence. I'm just not a golf instructor.

It really helps me to have smart teachers with me when analyzing stuff because when I'm on my own it's so easy to go off on some useless tangent that just wastes my time and energy.

If you want to "draws lines and stuff" you can get analyzr . I use that. It's fun and worth buying.

There are manuals out there to teach instructors how to teach but those are only for golf instructors within whatever program they're attempting to learn i.e. five simple keys and what not. Not all manuals are created equal. Also, it's doubtful you'll get to see one of those unless you are a teacher yourself, unfortunately. Trust me. I tried re: the Five Simple Keys manual.

jetfan1983, thanks. will def check out the sites. I dont think I will master learning the swing and be pro or anything. I like your idea on having someone else look at it and then see if I am seeing the same thing as them. thanks agin.

Good question.  I'm definitely going to read the linked threads as well since this is something I too have been fooling with.  I am fortunate to be working with a pro that is supportive of using video and the last few lessons have either started or finished with a review of videos.  Of course, that doesn't get you closer to answering your original question.

I have been using the V-One app for iPad to video my swing.  It leaves something to be desired in that the iPad doesn't have a really high speed camera (I presume it is a hardware issue...), but it is still quite useful and I already had the tablet so the investment was minimal.  I like it because it will let you compare two videos side by side stepping through the swing frame by frame.  If you have a friend or someone who plays well and has a swing you would like to emulate, try to get them to let you take a few videos of them on the range.  I think it would be optimal (others may disagree) if you can find someone with similar physical characteristics to your own to compare to.  I'm 59 years old with twelve-pack abs.  I'll never swing the club like Rory Mcilroy.

In terms of looking at video and drawing lines, I'll share these pics.  I would advice getting help because it's very difficult to teach yourself.  Most aren't able to identify their priority piece or they don't know how to fix the mistakes.  For example, the key to having a steady head isn't trying to focus on not moving your head.
