I've added a routine to my range practices this year based on a recommendation by my club pro. I hit 10 to 20 balls off of bare dirt. Because the lie is so tight, it's imperative to keep the weight forward and make ball first contact. The feedback is instantaneous. If you catch it a tad fat, it doesn't go far and you feel it in your hands. Thin it and you hit a low line drive... I've found this to be a great practice drill and I attribute this drill to better ball striking. Does anyone else do this? Are there drawbacks to practicing like this?

I do it.  I also practice out of divots and rough if possible.

There is more bare dirt at my range than at the courses I play but you never know what you'll find when you play.  I practice a little from the dirt and from divots as well.
