According to Golfweek magazine Taylor Made had 16 golf balls in play during the Open Championship which beat Nike with 15.

Of course Titleist was the leader with 95.

Callaway 14
Srixon 9
Bridgestone 6

Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Sergio and maybe one more person playing the Taylor Made ball at the beginning of the season?

I've never tried this ball, I didn't think they were having much success with it - but I guess it's more than I thought...

Consider this post an endorsement of TaylorMade balls. I played with them the other day at a golf outing. (I used the TP Red.) They're pretty soft and long off the tee, with decent spin around the greens. The biggest bonus for me is its durability. I played a full 18 holes with it and only on very close inspection do I see one tiny mark on it. That sure beats the hell out of Pro V1's, which I have to retire after about five holes on average.

TaylorMade's onto something good here. Not as good around the greens as the Pro V1, though.

10-20 yards, I'd say. It depends on the compression of the ball, the make, so on and so forth. Thing is, 10 yards might not seem like much, but consider this: Let's say you leave an approach shot 15 yards off line to the right. If you got the distance right, you're probably still on the green.

If you're 15 yards off line and 15 yards short, I'm going to bet your next shot is a tricky pitch and a difficult up and down. If you expect the ball to go 150, and it only goes 140, that can mean problems, especially at lower handicaps. (And it can save strokes, too.)

I've actually played about 5 holes with one. I just wonder what everyone else thinks that they are moving up the board with all of Nike's troubles.

They are an improved design by the same maker of the ProV balls... like the review that Eric made, they spin less but go a little bit further then the ProV... I've since switched because they do last longer and I was really hating the fact that I'd occasionally spin a ball right off the green...

Also they sound much much nicer off the putter face

If you are a ProV1 user, buy a sleeve of the TP Red and I guarantee you'll notice

You're wrong. Well above 20 or 30 PGA Tour players were playing the ball at the beginning of this year. Sergio switched to it

last year along with a bunch of others, including Justin Rose. We reviewed these last year, of course.

So do I. That's why I got the sleeve of TP Red's for free.

I stand corrected.

I also have to suspect that the ball is "good enough" for some pros to take the extra endorsement money they get by being one of TaylorMade's "head to toe" pros.

Like the Nike balls. Just barely "good enough." But not so for Jason Gore and Chris Couch...

Exactly. Also, I think TaylorMade is being more aggressive with their endorsement deals to get players to use their ball and putter.

Not if you dont have a reasonably high ball and swing speed. Alot of people will lose distance from a proV1. I find the greatest difference in buying expensive balls is the spin rate is much higher. I can make a prov1 skip twice and check with a wedge around the greens.. I find with the exception of a few, 2 piece balls dont spin much at all.

Well, I can say I'm different - I hit down on my irons causing a whole load of spin. I can get a Top Rock to hit, hop once, and check. Or with full wedge shots, sometimes they spin backwards. Use your imagination what happens when I hit a Pro V1.

I've found my best distance to come out of NXT Tour's (averaging 270-275), but I prefer V1x because it's just the right amount of spin around the green. Nothing beats the TaylorMade's ball durability, though.

I said around the greens.. meaning 40 yards and in. I de-loft the club, put the ball back in my stance.. i like a nice low trajectory with a lot of spin. But I sweep my irons so they come in with little or no spin.

    • Back in my Army days a "gooch" was a particular part of the anatomy. Example, say Okeechobee is the b-hole of Florida, then Belle Glade would be the gooch. Seems he wears his name well.
    • I can't say that I remember a lot of individual putts, but I do have one specific memory.  The first time I played the Old Course, I had hit a pretty good drive on the 6th hole.  I had about 60 yards left, and due to the swale in front of the green, there was no chance of flying a wedge on or near the green and having it stop on the green.  My caddie recommended either a running 7-iron chip or a putt, and I took the putter and a pretty hard swing.  The ball rolled over humps and through hollows, disappeared into the swale in front of the green, and re-appeared heading right at the hole.  I ended up maybe 12 feet away.  The caddie turned and held out his hand to shake mine, and said "Now THAT was a golf shot!"
    • For the first time since 2021, I made a 3 on the 12th at Stoneleigh.    395 yards, something like 80 feet uphill, I hit a solid drive and a 7-wood to inside a foot.  Even I couldn't miss that one.  I feel like I haven't played a lot of golf this year, but I'm making decent progress.
