Hello Everyone!

I've always been the type of girl who strives to keep up with and out do the boys.  Yes, I'm a female entering the realm of golf.  As someone who loves challenges, how could I pass up on a sport that stands for "gentleman only ladies forbidden"?  That incentive, along with the fact that my boyfriend thought me learning how to golf would provide us with an activity we could enjoy together, is how I found myself taking lessons May of this year.

I strive to be the best at pretty much everything that I try.  I like to think of myself as a natural athlete, and so of course that I thought that as a sport, golf would be relatively easy for me to pick up.  I mean, I've ran a half marathon, I'm about to compete in my first triathlon, I am a decent skier, I play soccer and basketball, and I'm pretty strong despite my 5'2'' frame.  I realized that I might need to work on putting or something like that, but as far as hitting a ball, how hard could it be?  I don't know about you, but there's nothing quite as humiliating or humbling as teeing off and the ball going approximately 8 feet.  Never have a met a sport where I have wanted to quit so badly and desperately wanted to spend 5 more hours practicing at the exact same time.

I go to the driving range, and hit my 3 wood 200 yards, average.  I get on the course, and well, sometimes I got it, and sometimes, not so much.  But I can't help but love everything about golf.  Did you know there are lady's golf shorts in existence that have little Santa Claus' surfing on them!??  I am so thirsty for more information, pointers, and anything and everything else golf related.

The people I like golfing with are, of course, males.  I am looking forward to becoming a golfer that can have a fun time with my friends without holding them back, or even worse, embarrassing myself and falling into the lady's golf stigma of dainty awkwardness.  I have a rather bad habit of needing to be good at things before I can thoroughly enjoy them.  I have a hard time laughing off ridiculous slices and taking 5 minutes to hit a ball out of a bunker.  My competitive nature is both a blessing and a curse.  One more thing, I absolutely love socks.

That's about it!

That is probably the most apt statement ever,

I think basically every one of us feels the same way so often.

Hmm, there may be more men that play gold than ladies by my unscientific calculations, but forbidden..?

Sounds like the majority of my tee offs!

Please, share your sources.

I need to add to my collection of shorts with martini glasses stitched on.

bddarnell, reference to the historical significance golf's namesake... G entlemen O nly L adies F orbidden :)  Although it is obviously not applicable now, it's a name that is too tempting not to poke fun at.

TJBam... Loudmouth Golf.  You'll die of pure joy and happiness once you see their assortment of golf apparel.

Hilarious! The men's mustache pattern, ohhh yes! I love the maximum stereotypical goodness.

Also-

"Golf" likely comes from Scottish goulf meaning "to strike."  But hey, whatever keeps your engine revved.

Most accounts I've read point to a Dutch origin of the word. Something along the lines of "colf", which was altered in Scots to "gouf" or "goulf".

But the Scot in me hopes that's all made up.

Yes that's another theory.  The Scot in me says it's wrong, too.

Welcome. Everyone else will yawn but you being new might enjoy this: The reason they call it golf is because all the other 4 letter words were taken! It is the most frustrating, fascinating, and enjoyable head game of a sport. I enjoy watching other sports, but it is the only one that got inside my head enough to make me want to be good at. Still trying after 40 years. Take a real lesson or two if you haven't already. It is easier to learn good habits than to unlearn bad ones. Don't get discouraged. Enjoy the good shots and laugh at the bad ones. If you can consistently hit that 3 wood 200 yards, you are better than a lot of us already!

Thanks!  I've been getting a lesson at least once every two weeks, and I hope to continue as long as my teacher doesn't get TOO frustrated with me :)  He's been really great.

Welcome! We're way underrepresented by ladies around here and I look forward to your perspective. BTW..... The real reason they call it golf is because all of the good four-letter words had already been taken! ;-)

    • So, it appears to me that everyone is bringing out some version of the zero-torque, or square to square, or torque balanced, putter.  What ever name you want to give it seems like everyone has one of these types of things in their line up now.  It reminds me of about 10 years ago, when everyone had to have a counter-balanced putter in their line-up.  Callaway Media | Videos, Podcasts, & Episodes | Golf Content The Official source for Callaway golf clubs, golf balls and gear.
