Explain to me again! Long, straight and forgiving isn't what we should aspire too?

If that were even remotely true than all irons would be the same and there would be no difference between blades and GI irons.

There is very little difference when your hitting the sweet spot. What your saving is the distance loss if you hit the ball slightly on the toe. A blade player like iron might come up 10 yards short, a GI iron might come up 3 yards short, that is huge if your carrying a bunker or water.

Sounds right. I wonder what percentage of us hit the ball with enough consistency to use anything blade like compared with the number of us who do actually use them?

I was lucky the way I started out. Only had my brothers old blades to teach myself with. So I had to find that sweet spot. Going to cb now just because I do not hit as hard. The blades just kept coming up short. I love my new easy swing. Blades still straight just not getting there without having to try and figure out how many club lengths I should figure on altering. Too much thinking kind of spoils my fun. The new irons fit in perfect with my current swing. They take the place of my old blades very nicely as far as distance and spin are concerned given that I have eased up quite a bit. And they are more accurate so to speak. Point is they are "more accurate" because I learned how to hit a blade

The one thing I like about the "player's" irons (not talking about blades, talking about the AP2's, MP59's, and S56/55's that aren't a full blade. I don't particularly like a full blade myself) is their sole and look compared to a game improvement iron. It allows me to feel more like I can hit down and through the golf ball without breaking my wrist because the club has a 2" sole on a 7-iron (looking at you, Ping g20's). For me it's a matter of confidence, and I tend to hit the ball better when I'm confident in my clubs and my swing. But seriously, those SGI irons that have the huge soles look like they'll bounce off the ground like it's stone to me.

The second thing is I like to know where I'm hitting the ball on the clubface. It helps me keep my swing a little more consistent it feels when I can tell that I'm starting to hit the ball off on the toe or heel. It warns me that I'm doing something that I shouldn't be and gives me a chance to, during a practice session and not mid-round, look at and adjust what I am doing that is causing it.

RIGHT!!!

I've decided.

I'm having a 'fitting' next week to determine lie, shaft type etc. £30.

Then...

Secondhand clubs and the left over money on a few lessons.

Never used Mizunos but just want them.

Looked on several local sites plus ebay.

Looks like a really good set of MX 25's, MX 900 for about £140

MX 950's or 1000's for a little more.

Now who's going to help me choose as these will be bought unseen and unhit, I'll just know the shaft and lie etc. should suit me!

Help appreciated please.

Even if it's just a summary of how you have got on with each club, looks etc.

I think I want a lot of help from the club without using something that looks like a shovel.

Steve :-)

Quickie off topic post, I think for your handicap any of those options are good.  Mizuno makes great irons, especially in the game improvement category.  I would lean towards the MX 900, 950 or 1000.

I read somewhere that the average HC 20 years ago was 17.5. Today the average HC is 17.4. I play blades because I want the errors and good strikes to happen from my swing, not a piece of equipment. That said, I'm not about to play with a small wooden driver :-) The most important parts of the game are: My mindset My physical swing My equipment In this order.

  • 2 weeks later...

Done it!

Let my heart rule my head a bit.

Got some 2 week old Mizuno jpx 925 pro's with rifle 5.5 shafts. So still money left over for a couple of extra lessons.

Probably not the most help I could get but man the difference between these and my old Rams is amazing ( then again all the clubs I tried felt so much easier to hit).

It feels great though to know that from now on (I have a Titleist 912 driver) all my poor shots are me!

It is so easy to lay some of the blame on your equipment and now I will have to admit that that's no true.

Great incentive to work on my swing.

I'll let you know how they play as opposed to the range.

    • Day 12: Same as last couple days, but focus was on recentering aspect of flow. When I recenter earlier I make decent contact most swings but if I recenter late or not at all it’s a roll of the dice.
    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
