Hi all,

I don't think this would be considered "Yips", yet when chipping, I have a bad habit of decelerating. I will make a nice slow, short back swing, then even though I know that I should follow through with a full swing, I sort of stop just as I hit the ball. Now I have a line drive over the green. Any tips?  What to practice to prevent this?

I have two drills which help me One is lifting the heel and chipping off the toe There's a recent thread in this forum about this method this gives me excellent ball control and ball roils to the hole like a putt The other is a Stan Utley drill where he holds his club upside down and tries to chip with the handle of the club. After a few tries like this I get the feel and return the club right side up and able to tap the ball to the hole with right amount of feel

The reason you are doing this is because your trying to forces a distance instead of letting the club do the work.

This will help you get the standard short game motion. You will use a pitching motion for about 95% of all your short game shots. If you want to chip, then I recommend just using a putting motion, with a slight wrist hinge.

Good video in the thread above. Notice how the lead arm remains straight. For me, this is what I need to remind myself to do in order to hit solid short shots. FOR ME, when I'm playing well, I try not to think of much in the stroke when hitting short pitches and chips. I remind myself to keep a straight lead arm (without the reminder I tend to bend the arm just enough to distroy any chance of hitting the ball solidly) and then think about the flight I want and EXACTLY where I want the ball to land. Like putting, I try not to think about length of swing and followthrough. I've hit enough balls to let my sub-conscience take over. If I was tossing the ball, I would not think about my tossing technique, wrist position, followthrough.... Same idea here.

When I get hippy around the green, no amount of thinking will help. It is hard, but I try to just think about the lead arm and hope that does it.

Not sure if that will help you.

I also would try different grips. Full fingered reverse double overlap, double overlap , overlap and interlocking I think there is much art in chipping and sometimes different grip works for example a bump chip and another grip for a lob chip and another for a tap chip etc

I often feel the less fingers I have on the handle like double overlap.the better I can chip it. The more fingers the better I can "pitch" the ball

    • Day 37: did my drill swings in the garage with foam balls for about 15 minutes. Working on getting my backswing more turned and then going from there.
    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
    • Day 12 - 2025-12-31 Limited time today, and heavy rains here. 5-10 minutes of mirror work for full swing, working on trail side.
