I used to play with an irish guy that paused and set himself at the top of the backswing. He was a pretty decent player too if he made is putts, he shot in the mid to low 80's with that funky swing.

Conrad Rehling touted this as a training exercise.
(Being a tough old bird, he also touted hitting iron shots off a 2x4.)

I have two first cousins who both come to complete stops at the top of the swing. They are OK players.

I've never seen a good player do anything like Conrad's exercise (putting the club in the slot without a backswing) or stop at the top.

I have been practicing the "NSB" in my garage for a couple of days. Took it to the course today and must say I haven't played that well in 15 years. I personally don't care what it may look like to other golfers, while there in the  woods looking for their ball or dragging their ball out of the pond or creek. I'm a 18 handicap after appx. 5 years of not playing. My first rounds at the beginning of this season were anywhere from high 90's to low 100's. With this new swing I was able to take 9 or 10 strokes off my game today shooting a 90 including 2 penalty strokes. I now can't wait to get out again Sunday and give it one more try.

So to all you non believers I'll say if you haven't tried it, and maybe some don't need too, or even seen the video, hold your negative comments. There are some of us that need some help and if this is what does it, so be it.

Yep I gave it a try today and was very impressed. As for was I a puller, pusher, topper or fatter all I can say is all of the latter.  I practiced this swing in my garage for a few days and to me the hardest thing was stopping with my left arm parallel to the ground, and then giving it a little pump before the downswing. Now I've only played once with the NSB but after today I can't wait to play this Sunday.  Longer....Straighter.....Luv It  !!!

zimmster, i'm a no backswinger too, really good to hear that you're using it and playing well.  i'd love to hear updates on your progress.    i truly believe NBS is a more efficient way to swing the club.  here's a video of my version of it.

100% agreed. I was about to post the same thing earlier, but got distracted. 1) there is a backswing, 2) at best it's a very long pause at P5 and 3) the club goes back to P4 again before completing the shot. Therefore, not only is it not NBS you could argue it's actually TWO backswings!

I think the NBS could be a good training drill, particularly if you're working on right elbow movements in transition or something like that.

Training drill yes, radical new swing pattern no! I'm sticking to my one-plane, centered-pivot swing thank you... ;-)

I'm using this technique in my garage in an attempt to get into some (more-correct?) positions than I usually do.

My back swing (in fact, whole routine) has been terrible since I started golfing a year ago. I would have no problem doing this on a course cause I really don't give a hoot what someone else thinks it looks like.

Practicing this, I get to set my arm position and wrist angles before I start a downswing; something I just could not seem to do while I was overloaded with backswing thoughts.

Now I just think about right knee flex, turning, right arm position, and keeping the wrists angle correct.

For the first time ever, I have been able to get the hands ahead of the club, and hit the ground in front of the ball.

Many of us poor golfers read what you better golfers have to say and do with hopes of improving how we play the game.

Beware that with your negative opinionated comments, you may deter a poor golfer from trying out something that may eventually lead then in the right direction.

For all you good swingers, this drill or technique probably is and looks hokey to you....and you certainly don't need this in your game.

In my opinion, It is a miss justice for you to totally bash something that may help a high handicapper start to feel what a good position feels like, or what it feels like to stop going over the top or casting.

The goal is to get around the course in as few strokes as possible, and if this helps someone attain that goal, why say it BS?, argue about symantics, say it's silly, or whatever.

My only real complaint is with the name as there is quite clearly a backswing. If you are swinging this way and having success, that's great. I am not bashing it as it appears to be a conventional swing with a pump action in the downswing.

I agree with scv76 on this.  I'm having difficulty combining the first movements of S&T into fluid motion, too much thinking. (More Tai Chi mirror practice is needed.) I don't want to revert to my old back swing to play, so I'm playing by assuming an S&T version of no back swing.  As a band aid it works.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
