  1. 1. AP2 PW or Vokey for the new iron set? You decide!

    • Vokey wedge

    • AP2 wedge

For me it came down to what the club will be used for most and some are multi-use. If you are the guy that hits a PW over 130-140 yards IMO you are out of finesse territory anyway. Doesn't mean you can't pitch/chip with it closer in but it is probably more forgiving at that distance than a MB style wedge would be.

That is just it. My PW is used dually as a scoring club and full swing club. Since I have been playing the Mizunos the PW tends to go way farther than my Pings with my choked down shots. I was thinking of dropping the loft down with a SM5 to dial in a 115-120 yard shot because it seems like I use my PW for more choked down scoring shots than full swing shots. Of course I may just need to practice with the distance too instead of using the SM5. It is almost a buy both scenario and then decide which one I like better.

I think it is all how you perceive the club.

Agreed.

That's me.  I wouldn't change out my PW when I get new clubs, but I think I'd definitely consider making the GW match the wedges.  My full swing SW (with a finesse swing) is about 100-105.  If I try and kill it, maybe I get it up to 110.  My full swing with the GW is 120-125.  Pull it slightly and it goes 130.  I feel like I'd likely be better suited taking a "finesse" type full swing with a GW that looked like a wedge than the one I currently have.  And then, perhaps, my large gap moves up in between the G and the P so instead of having trouble with the 115 shots, I have trouble with the 125 shots.

The other thing I think I'd consider is to weaken everything a degree or two and lose a wedge.  Instead of a 46, 50, 54 and 59, I could just have a 48, 52 (or 53) and a 58.  Then I'd probably add a 5 wood.

I should probably stop talking about clubs and club setups because now I'm gonna start making myself believe I need new ones. :-P

This is what I have done this year.  My PW is 47 and I used to use a 50, 54 58 combo.  I replaced the 50 54 with a 52 and have room to do 3W and 5W now.  I am going to play around with both combos.  Sometimes I miss the 50 for full shots.

Good stuff here...and to comment on the shaft flexology stuff from my post yesterday a good point was made, My MB's have NS 950gh-S shafts and my Vokeys have the KBS wedge-S shafts, so I can relate to why I hit my 52 as far as my 47-PW. I got the NS 950's on my MB's because I liked the way they hit on my cleveland 588 wedges?...crap...I got the wrong wedges in the wrong bag...f***...born blond...to die bald...Ciest la vie....

    • Day 48. Got out at lunch to the range to hit some driver shots. Haven’t had much practice there. Focused on setup suggested by @iacas and found some very playable results. I did try to hit a couple of bunker shots after that with much less success 🙃
    • Got a rare birdie on #18 Par 5.  Drive was good and left me in range of the green.  I was @ 210 from the center and needed @ 180 to clear a hazard area.  Green had bunkers lest, right and on back. had been struggling and most shots were short so I took the 225 club figuring back of green hit well. i did hit it well, @ 229 per SS and dead on—kind at the pin.  Ended up @ 1 foot off the back in short rough and lucky for me it was a back pin placement.  Chipped about 15 feet leaving a 3 feet putt for par which I sunk.
    • Yea, so to clarify for me. I do not feel the clubface much in the swing. I feel the weight of the club. I can feel if I hit the club off the heel or toe. When I try to feel if the clubface is open or closed in the swing, I feel it more with my hands, and less of the clubhead. I would classify majority of my swings as not feeling like the clubface does much of all. It feels like I hold the clubface open. In the finish, it doesn't feel like my left hand faces the ground. It feels more like it faces the sky. I will try to be more aware of this, but it was just the sensation I got when I was making what felt like good swings. For the most part, I was hitting slight draws or slight pushes.  On this golf trip, I had to hit a low 8 iron around a tree to the green. I made an alignment adjustment, and actively try to roll my hands a bit more to get it to sling around the corner. I do have a habit of not adjusting how the clubface comes through impact, and I can still hit the ball straight-ish even moving the ball way back in my stance and trying to swing out more.  Yea, my feels are more hands and arms, less actually feeling the clubface.
