Aged Golf Balls

I had to stop golfing for a little over two years.. In the past few months I have started playing again. After getting my bag out of the dust heap in my garage, I found I still had several brand new, (2+years ago) golf balls in my bag. Since I was just basically getting back into the game, I decided to play these older balls. What I have found is that even after just laying lose in my bag all this time, these Srixon balls still play pretty much the way I hoped they would. "Old Age" has not seemed to hurt them. I don't know how much new technology may have advanced golf balls the past couple of years. I won't know till I run out of these older balls. So, I ask those of you who have been playing for the past few years. Have golf balls improved very much over this two year time frame? What's the "hot" new ball out there these days?

A whole bunch of Tour Edge golf stuff...... :beer:

I'm no expert but I would say there isn't much of a difference. I've played balls from the 90's and they still play the same. There's always going to be the one company that says they've made a "major breakthrough" every year but for the most part, a ball is a ball.

Found this article which basically states a golf ball should be OK for 10 or so years in the proper conditions.  I think the most important question you would need to ask yourself is what are you trying to get out of a golf ball (distance, spin, control, etc.)?  There are many options now that cater to different swing speeds, shot trajectory, etc.  There are options online to help narrow down the options.  Here are a couple...

Yes, I am finding the same thing with these not so new Srixons. They are playing well. I even found an old sleeve of those TM Penta balls, and played them the other day. Only difference was the Srixons traveled farther. Not by much, but enough to notice. One thing is for sure. I am not losing them as fast as I thought I would.

As long as they're not in the heat, they should last. Heat will degrade a balls performance. Heat will also degrade a graphite shaft's performance. Don't store your golf bag in your car trunk.

Yeah, my old balls sure don't like the heat. I keep my golf bag in the trunk all summer long. I don't think that the trunk gets hot enough to damage the clubs, but I don't know for sure. I've read that the stories about club epoxy failing from being in a hot truck are malarkey but this is the first I've heard about shafts degrading. Got any links to studies on this?

Don't have any links. An old club maker told me that because I kept my bag in my trunk. Heat does a lot of nasty stuff, especially here in Florida. Heat won't affect steel and the epoxy needs 200 degrees I think. I did a quick search and found some comments about heat but most were about the epoxy. I guess over time the repeated heating could affect the epoxy. I'm still more concerned about the affect of excessive heat on my balls and shaft.

      I’d go with the Titleist if you liked the look of the blades but were suffering with distance. They should be a little more forgiving than a full blade and still retain some workability. Also remember to consider the shafts each have as this will be a big contributor to how they feel. Clemsonfan is right though… get fit or spend a bit of time on a launch monitor 🤙

      Hi All my New Year’s resolution was to start playing golf again. I’ve caught the bug and am really enjoying hitting balls at a couple of my local ranges.looking forward to getting back out on courses in the spring. Based in the UK and 38 years old, I’ve been playing since I was a kid. Best handicap I’ve held is 2 in my mid 20s. Over the past 10 years I’ve played once or twice a year, sometimes with friends or for work. Could shoot 4-5 over, but just as easily shoot 15-20 over. I’ve moved to South Wales and am very lucky to be near some world class links courses, which gives me even more motivation to get playing again! I will start looking for a local coach in my area when I have more time to invest, but I recalled scouring this forum a few years ago and finding some good tips and advice so wanted to give it a try to see if there were any glaring issues I could fix in the meantime!  A few swings below… one from 1st week Jan and one from today. I have fixed my P1 takeaway to my liking and am now working on what I see as pretty severe early extension & hip thrust. Also terrible hip rotation. I’d like confirmation that this is indeed a problem and and suggestions on a few good drills. Thanks for reading 🙂 I've been Playing Golf for: 30+ years My current handicap index or average score is: 10ish over My typical ball flight is: mid The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: push right with irons, hooks and push with driver!  Videos:
