Hello Friends.  New guy here looking for some help.  I a 10 hc shooting in the low 80's and want to bring my game into the 70's.

I have always taken a shallow divit [I'm more of a sweeper] but decided more compression at impact would help my game.  I have pretty well gotten it down except I can decide at what point in the swing you begin t cup the left wrist.

Perhaps some of you could give me some help in this area.

Thanks much for your help and best wishes.

Cupping the wrist isn't something you need to think about. If you're a 10 handicap and a sweeper there is a very good chance your wrist already cups before impact. So if anything you want to work on pieces that'll help you achieve more of an inline impact condition (shaft lining up with the lead arm at impact). We call it Key #3

Don't most people keep their wrist flat these days? I know I always have

Not most ;-)

Thanks to all of you for your replies.  I will reply as best I can.

1.  No, there are a lot of golfers who have different wrist position at top of swing.  I am more specifically speaking of a cupped wrist at impact which allows more of a divot.  As I have been more of a sweeper of the ball, my wrist has had little cupping at impact.

2.  It will be a while before I can post a video of my swing as I have never done it and have no way yet of doing that.  I am looking into it.

3.  Thanks you for the photos, that is almost exactly the position I am attempting to reach at the bottom of my swing.  Until now, I have never thought about my wrist position at impact until seeing a video and trying it.  I am much encouraged by the result which allows a much more penetrating ball flight.

As I am very new to that process, I thought you folks might have some suggestions on how/when to cup the wrist in the downswing process.  I will be looking into your 5 swings process.

Thanks again for your help.

You might be mixed up on what cupping means when it comes to the left wrist. Cupping is dorsiflexion of the left wrist. Bowing or palmar flexing is the opposite, that would lead to more of a divot.

This is cupping or dorsiflexion

mvmac:  Thanks for the photo.  Apparently I was using the wrong terminology.  I will use the word bowing as it is easier to work with.  Yes, that is the subject of my question.  Perhaps I will learn more about proper terminology if I can stay at it long enough.

I assume the wrist is bowed on the downswing prior to impact.  Any suggestions as to when/how that might happen or is it just subject to the individual swing?

I am very pleased at the result of learning this move.

We like to say "lag happens", so a flat or bowed wrist is a result of good things happening before it. What you need to work on to improve your impact alignments depends on a few things. Can't really give you an answer without seeing your swing.

Thanks Mike, I will work on a video but it's going to be a while.

I'm not at all unhappy with my swing, ball contact hits the sweet spot and the ball goes where I want even better now as I work on that impact position. Pinching the ball really adds more for my ball flight.   I just thought there might be some opinions on when to  begin bowing that wrist as you reach impact.

Best wishes to you and thanks for your help.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
