Not even Peyton Manning is allowed to play from the tips at St. Andrews

By Alex Myers

NFL superstar Peyton Manning's umpteenth interview with NFL reporter Peter Kingactually produced a brand new nugget of information -- even if it had nothing to do with football. King asked Manning "What's the best round of golf in your life?" and got this response:

"I shot even par, 72, at St. Andrews. Me, Cooper and Eli, and my dad went three summers ago. But, we were playing from the 'up' tees -- because they made you. They get so much play. Everybody wants to go and play where the pros play. They'd be six-hour rounds. So they say, 'Hey, this is where you're playing.' It's probably 6,400 yards. Not a long course at all. I like to say that even if I was all the way back there, I had it dialed in that day. So it was fun. Obviously, that's my favorite golf foursome of all time."

Perhaps the greatest quarterback in history playing golf's most historic course? Pretty cool. And pretty crazy that even Manning, whose golf resume also includes a 77 at Augusta National and two holes-in-one, wasn't allowed to play from the set of tees he wanted. Although, we're not sure if the leader of the Denver Broncos put up much of a fight at a place that's known for running a pretty tight ship.

Among the "10 things you need to know if you are playing the Old Course" listed on the course's website are the requirement that golfers bring their official handicap certificate and that fairway mats -- mats that you bring with you to hit balls off of in the fairway and rough -- are to be used from November to March. Even the use of pull carts is limited to help maintain the course's condition.

Good.

I got to play from the back tees. Not the one or two tees that are technically on the New Course that they use in the British Open, but on every other tee I played as far back as they had tees.

Unless, of course, they literally build new tees and then take them down…?

P.S. The caddies moved my bag forward several times on the first tee. I don't know why they even have tee markers farther back if they really don't want anyone to play from them.

I remember you had to play the tees they had put out but I recall some being back, some being up. It wasn't like playing the whites. Was a little disappointed until I got to 17 and saw the new pro tee box about 100 yards back. Not even sure I could have gotten it over the shed from there.

To be honest, I'm pretty sure that few people in the UK would know who PM is.

Seriously.

Russell Wilson, on the other hand… :D

I think he plays a lot in the off season.  He was at Pebble Beach just a couple of days after the Super Bowl playing with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.

Ha ha, yes. I get that, watching a bit of NFL myself. Ii must say that Jim Nantz's sycophantic drooling over PM is a bad as he gets with Tiger...

It's worse than you can imagine.  He also is in many commercials!  I have no ill will toward him as he appears to be an upstanding gentlemen, which the league surely needs.

    • Thank you.  I'll cross it off the list since it isn't going to achieve what I want.
    • While it does turn out that both Tiger and Phil are less squeaky clean than I previously believed, I don't think golf quite has the worst in professional sports.  Or maybe they're better at image management.   Obviously I'm not fond of Phil's issue we're discussing in this thread (or his involvement with LIV) or Tiger's choices of how to drive.  I used to really like Dustin Johnson and, even before the LIV situation, we started to hear rumors that he bought more snow than Seward, although I don't think those stories were ever substantiated.  Meanwhile, I did think of Anthony Kim as the "good, bad boy" of the tour for a while fifteen years ago because of his party persona -- and if it turns out the worst he did was show up hung over to play (barring what one thinks of LIV), that's pretty good.  And I'm still happy he found a way to get his life clean. If we contrast that with some other sports I enjoy, I'm sure we could find a nice long list of NFL players that, at one point in my life, I was quite fond of, we get far worse disappointments (to put it mildly).
    • Answering that properly would land me in hot water, so I'm not going to. I don't think that many people would do that. I think that in certain circumstances many people would be willing to overlook someone doing that. But I was really referring to what I assumed was Tiger's transgressions (cheating on his wife) not Phil's.
    • No! Is a large part of the human population selfish, apathetic and cuts corners in the name of self-preservation 'more than they would like to admit', yes. Degenerate, scum, etc?.. no!! Most humans/men would not grope a woman like Phil is accused of doing (I think he absolutely did). That is scum. I mean what % of men do you think would do that? Seriously??
