Had fun yesterday with the Friday men's group - played 3 club competition where you play all 18 holes using only 3 clubs.  Very fun.  I used a 5i, pw, and putter.  Shot a 91 (10 hcp) which wasn't great, with 3 triples because of bad planning.  If I don this again, I'd use a 5i, SW, and putter.

Anyone else enjoy this torture?

Yes I have done a 3 club 9 hole tourney before and it was a blast. My question for you is -Why use a putter? You give up so much length by using a 5 iron and putting with a hybrid/3w/driver really isn't that hard. Come to think of it, any club can be a putter. When I played there were a few guys putting with their sand wedge

Just starting to get the skill level where I can do this, at all. It's really fun. Thinking of getting one of those 5 club bags and toting 4-5 clubs on some of my morning rounds.

Before I retired from public education, I used to coach junior varsity golf. Every year I made the guys play a two club, nine hole tournament, one of which was the putter. (I didn't want the regulars at the golf course seeing a bunch of teenagers putting with five irons, or I would have made them use one club.)

The irony of the challenge was that someone would shoot 41 or 42 with two clubs, then go out the next day and shoot 45 with all 14 clubs.  Ah-h-h-h-h-h-h-h!

I play in these every year for  the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. They are a lot of fun. My clubs of choice are a 5W, 7I, and a wedge. Sometimes I might use a different iron depending on which course they are using. I putt with my 5W.  There's one coming up in November I will be entering.

I used a putter because almost half of my strokes when I play golf are with a putter, usually in the 30 - 34 range.  My course isn't that long (6400) and I hit my 5i about 190-200.  My problem was that I couldn't control the distance on my pitching wedge very well.  80-110 yard shots consistently were long and off the green.  If I could have had 3 of my shots back, using the sw instead of the pw, I would have saved at least 5 strokes and won the game (lost by 1, net).  I'm the only one whose putting stayed consistent.  Everyone else wasted many strokes because of the putting.

    • Day 4 (24 Jun 26) - Played the mid-week shootout - iffy day on putts as I had 35 and of late been in the upper 20's.   Greens recently verti-cut and they are a bit bump and long haired - no excuses as I need to learn to trust making the proper adjustments.   Overall a decent day with some solid long game shots.

    • Thank you.  I'll cross it off the list since it isn't going to achieve what I want.
    • While it does turn out that both Tiger and Phil are less squeaky clean than I previously believed, I don't think golf quite has the worst in professional sports.  Or maybe they're better at image management.   Obviously I'm not fond of Phil's issue we're discussing in this thread (or his involvement with LIV) or Tiger's choices of how to drive.  I used to really like Dustin Johnson and, even before the LIV situation, we started to hear rumors that he bought more snow than Seward, although I don't think those stories were ever substantiated.  Meanwhile, I did think of Anthony Kim as the "good, bad boy" of the tour for a while fifteen years ago because of his party persona -- and if it turns out the worst he did was show up hung over to play (barring what one thinks of LIV), that's pretty good.  And I'm still happy he found a way to get his life clean. If we contrast that with some other sports I enjoy, I'm sure we could find a nice long list of NFL players that, at one point in my life, I was quite fond of, we get far worse disappointments (to put it mildly).
    • Answering that properly would land me in hot water, so I'm not going to. I don't think that many people would do that. I think that in certain circumstances many people would be willing to overlook someone doing that. But I was really referring to what I assumed was Tiger's transgressions (cheating on his wife) not Phil's.
