I live a couple of blocks from the city muni, but it sucks. I drive across the county (17 miles) to play another muni. The clubs in my area are too expensive. I enjoy getting deals at different courses. Plus I play in a work league at a private club which is way out of my price range, but I can play 9 holes in league for $15. Our league is talking about changing to another very nice private club. Also too expensive for me. Our league president can get some good deals because of the number of golfers (and drinkers) we can bring in. I'm staying with my current situation of being unattached. :-)

Pittsburgh's muni, Bob O'Connor Golf Course at Schenley Park, is located in the Oakland section of the city and has some wonderful views, mostly of Pitt's campus, but you can see downtown from some holes.

Great views, course not so much. (You hit off of rubber mat tees, on several holes you hit across roads that go through Schenley Park, and on other holes you have to avoid the telephone poles & wires.)

Nice.

What did the membership plan end up being?

Golf is so cheap here in "Fly-Over" country that you probably don't want to know!!!!   Trust me on this........LOL

http://drummfarmgolfclub.com/

This is an upscale public course that stretches to over 7100yds on nearly 300acres!!   A big property with abundant nature!   New ownership took over and the new memberships are cheaper than ever.   For 2015, I am paying $139.99 per month for unlimited golf including cart.  I can play both courses....the championship course and par30 executive.   I wonder how long it will take until they realize the prices are underpriced for even this market?   I paid $2500 last year for Stone Canyon.....the #3 rated public course in the state.

Memberships at Drumm start at $29.99......LOL  (for the fitness club)  The health club is included in my membership, but I am in it to play golf.   I need to work out, but golf is more fun......LOL

What's in Paul's Bag:
- Callaway Big Bertha Alpha Driver
- Big Bertha Alpha 815 3-wood
- Callaway Razr Fit 5-wood
- Callaway Big Bertha 4-5 Rescue Clubs
-- Mizuno Mx-25 six iron-gap wedge
- Mizuno Mp-T4 56degree SW
- Mizuno Mp-T11 60degree SW
- Putter- Ping Cadence Ketsch

$1,700 per year at a country club for unlimited golf with cart is pretty sick.

I think the most inexpensive country club around here is around $3,000 and the cheapest (although one of the nicer courses in the area) public course is $36 and, tbh, you have to be in pretty good shape to walk as it's got tons of hills.  So, once you play 50 rounds (which I'd like to do this year), it doesn't become cost effective.  Plus, I'm guessing at a country club you can probably go out there when it's not as busy to play and practice at the same time.

Anyway, that's pretty awesome and hopefully they don't realize it's underpriced for a while. ;-)

I signed up for a season pass at our local muni's for $476 (no cart included).  As a walker, I appreciate that the cost doesn't include a cart.  I intend to play other courses but if I play our main city course 25 times or so, the investment should be breakeven.

We are about 3 miles from the course so heading over in the evening allows one to play a few holes, practice out of some of the course bunkers, etc...  The beauty of a membership or pass is that once you swallow the initial cost, everything is "free".  One can play on miserable days and quit without regret if it gets too bad.  Or just play 3 or 6 holes.

I used to buy a pass every season back about 20 years ago or so.  I dropped it when they jacked up the cost following the course renovation.  I am excited to see how this works out this year.

I belong to the only private club in my immediate area.  The dues this year for a Senior Limited membership were raised to $499.  I get to play one of the most immaculately groomed courses in the area, though it is only 9 holes.  The membership is 'limited' in that I can play weekdays only and have to tee off or make the turn by 11:00 am.  That fits my schedule perfectly.  I also can play reciprocals at several great courses in the area by just paying the cart fee.  A 'full' membership costs $1000 more than my Senior rate, money that can buy a bunch of green fees at the public courses when I want to play on a weekend (most clubs are in the $25-$30 range around here).  I'm a full-time walker and most of the time I carry.  I've got a great situation and can't imagine not being a member...........................the Mailman

Aaaaah yes.......the finger lake region.   As an Ohio kid, I used to drive up there every summer to pick up boats in Penn Yan a few times a summer............ yes, it was work and I was in-and-out without a chance to explore the area........but I remember those road trips fondly.....LOL

I'd leave at midnight.............arrive at the Penn Yan boat factory at 8am....pick-up a boat and return by 5pm...this was a long day!!!  I was a teenager 30 years ago and was paid $200 every time I made this trip...........this was a great DAYS WAGE  for a teenager in the mid-1980s......LOL   Whenever I was asked if I wanted to make the trip....my answer was "HELL YES"....beautiful area to be sure.... I remember seeing a summer carnival that I wished I could have stopped at..LOL

I drove this baddazz truck with a big-block.....it roared when I put the pedal down...LOL  It had a cassette player so I was sure to bring a bunch of tapes so I was jamming to good music all the way there and back!!  to this day.....I  can remember passing through Cleveland jamming to Billy Thorpe..........."Children of the Sun" on one of those trips.....LOL
