I've been Playing Golf for: Over 10 years

My current handicap index or average score is: Aver score 100

My typical ball flight is: Push slice

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Fat and slicing drives

I went to the range today intending to film my bad swings but I ended up hitting more good than bad. Here is a drive I hit well. It had a slight draw but did not go far.

I will post my bad swing tomorrow. But for now can you tell why I am lacking power.

Yes, you don't turn your hips/torso very much on the backswing.

I would watch this video and turn both feet out at address.

Great advice Mvmac. I am swinging exactly like the left video in the Key #1. I am going to try this out on the range this week.

I had developed a pull hook in my drives after a long time of hitting high slices. I did not capture a DTL view of the hook

but here is the slice.

And here is the pull hook face on. I will work on the full backswing before I worry about these shots. But would like to know what caused each.

Yes turn those feet out and turn those hips more.

I have been working on getting a fuller back swing by flaring my feet. It defiantly works, I can get my shoulders past 90 dgrs, I took some video yesterday and will edit and post today. I noticed that some people post their video in a slower speed. Is that helpful?

It helps if you are just going to look at it in the web page.

It doesn't really help if it's just a slowed down version of the same exact video and you're going to use it in something like Analyzr, where you can just go frame by frame anyway.

I have what I call the "Perfect first shot at the range syndrome". Here is my first drive it went perfectly straight. Then it was down hill for there.

I was flaring my feet as suggested but it looks like I still was not fully getting into the back swing. It is the difference between what I feel and what is really

happening. I guess I will have to do some swings in front of a mirror and try to find a feel of when I have made a complete turn. Here is a video

of a pull hook. This is what I have been doing lately with my drive. I am swinging differently now and I have a very strong grip from my old swing

that was helping me not slice. Well I do not slice anymore just pull hook.

And here is a face on view of a driver pull hook.

Thanks for you comments and assistance,

Stick with the foot flare. Next piece is for your left side to "bend" down longer. Your left shoulder moves level to the ground and it runs into your chin, restricting your turn. Watch this:

I have been practicing turning my left shoulder down instead of level. I took a couple videos today of my practice with the driver and a 7i.

It looks to me like I am moving my front knee wrong. It is going out instead of in.

I would appreciate any comments. Hope everyone is having a good Thanksgiving.

It's hard to say from the FO (face on) view but it doesn't look like you're allowing your hips to turn at all. It's going to be very difficult - read impossible - to get a decent shoulder turn without letting your hips turn.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

Nice job with the practice Doug, you're on the right track! I would agree that the left knee is flexing over your left foot on the backswing, allow it to flex and rotate inward, that'll help you turn your hips more.

Can also do this drill to help, again allow that left knee to move inward. Quick note about this video, it's a little exaggerated, you don't have to work the shoulders as steep as the instructor is demonstrating.

I went to the range today. I was striking the ball much cleaner. I felt I was turning well until I came home and looked at the videos.

Here is a couple videos of swings that had the ball going straight. The FO swing looks like I am not turning

my hips well. Guess it would be better if I reviewed the video at the range. This is hard with such a small screen and

the glare from the sun. I use a Kodak Play Sport it had a 720p 60FPS mode.

Thanks for the help. It is working.

Good to hear contact was better. It's going to take some time to really change the picture in your full speed swing. Next piece I would recommend is for you to set-up with more axis tilt (hips more forward at address). Will help you turn more and make some of the downswing stuff easier.

Good threads for you to check out.

Thanks Mike. I will check out those threads. Question. More axis tilt with driver only or with all clubs?

I did not give you all the results of my trip to the range. I no longer slice the ball. Since I have started to implement the 5SK's

everything has been hooking. When I tried the suggestions from the How to draw the golf ball thread I  hooked the

ball even worse. So I went back to a square stance and weakened my grip( I have been using a super strong grip) to

straighten the flight out some.

I was looking over all the video I took yesterday and I see something in common in the worst swings. I do not turn

my hips back fully and if I do instead of turning on the DS I squat down and go bow legged and then do the fake turn to finish.

Do you have any drill to help me turn my hips back and through better?

We do. The backswing, though, is a bit of your priority right now, so I suggest you stick to that for now as it's in your best interests.

Feel like the backswing is ALL TURN, like your arms do nothing but kind of go along for the ride. They'll still bend and move, but try to feel like they do nothing but are just carried by the pivot. The pivot, btw, starts with the hips, or at the very least, very clearly includes them.

For the draws/hooks, just point the clubface a little right at setup, then take your grip. If you understand this, it should make sense: let's assume you return the clubface at impact square, 0°, but your path is 6° out. That would produce a pretty big hook. Set the clubface 3° right-pointing (right of the target line) at setup and return there at impact and you'll be more like 3°/6° with your face/path, which will push the ball right (3° face) and then draw the ball back near your target. Those are rough numbers because the ratio changes depending on some things like the loft, clubhead speed, etc., but a good general concept.

I videoed myself practicing my back swing and I found that my head was moving backwards. So I set up a Steady Head training aid at work.

It is a yardstick taped to a large hand truck.
