Powerful backers are giving the idea of a U.S. Caddie Open some legs

By Tim Rosaforte

This article first appeared in the Nov. 17 issue of Golf World.

Adam Corson was among the PGA of America professionals let go at the Dick's Sporting Goods chain this summer. Good friend Kurt Seifert is the caddiemaster at Robert Trent Jones GC in Manassas, Va. Together, they launched an idea that has struck a nerve with an influential group within the game.

"After I lost my job at Dick's, I was figuring out what to do," Corson said. "Talking to Kurt, we decided, let's focus on a tournament for caddies."

Not just a small-time event for caddies. The U.S. Caddie Open will have local and sectional qualifying, followed by a 36-hole championship on Thanksgiving weekend in 2015.

What are the qualifications? I've caddied. Dave has caddied. Just on major tours? At private country clubs?

Seems like an odd thing dedicate your life to doing, but… oh well. :)

Interesting but caddies vary quite a bit when it comes to actual golfing ability. Would mini tour drop outs turned caddy dominate or would amateur status come in to play as well? I know they have a championship for the PGA teaching pros but even that is not too exciting, just something to fill in the tv schedule on an off week.
