My TV was weirdly dim tonight when I turned it on. It's lasted nearly 10 years.

Probably looking at getting that one.

It's recommended highly here: http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-tv/ . We don't need the one with speakers (the main one). $1500 off at Amazon. I have $900 in Amazon gift cards. So…

I'd go with the 240 hz, picture better. Last couple I've gotten I traded size for picture quality. 5 yrs ago, I could have gotten a 55" with 120Hz but settled for a 52" with 240. Few months back I went with a 60" 240 over a 65" 120. I think it's worth it. I'm talking about the Sammy's btw. Don't know much about Sony, except I wouldn't register it on-line. ;)

Wirecutter disagrees with you.

I don't know what TV you're talking about as you don't link to anything. Source video is only 60 Hz, my current TV is 720p (60", a Sony KDF60XS955 rear projection LCD), and so the Samsung seems like a good way to go since I don't need the speakers on the Sony in the article.

Thanks, @newtogolf , you have the 85" version of this same TV?

Yes, I bought it over the summer.

I don't think you can tell the difference between a 120 and 240 hz. Maybe when they are sitting right next to each other but they both look a lot better than your 60 hz. My in law's just got a Sony 4k and wow it looks good. Now that being said almost nothing is in 4k at the moment and who's going to pay 3500 for a 60 in.

I don't know. This one's $2500 for a 65".

I'm sorry I just looked at the link but that was for the 55 not the 65.

This is the one my in laws have and it's really nice. They got theirs from American or something like that. It came with 2 pairs of 3D glasses and it makes reality look sad.:)http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00J58BEIK/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1420252181&sr;=8-2&dpPl;=1&dpID;=415vIsyLVbL&ref;=plSrchπ=AC_SX200_QL40

I had initially bought the 78" curved but didn't see the value in the curve when it was set up in my living room so I swapped it out for the 85".  When you see the UHD demo it will blow you away.  When we have friends or family over they always ask to see the demo (store mode) as it makes HD look like NTSC.

This is my shopping cart for now at Amazon.

Wirecutter says:

If the extra girth of the speakers is a dealbreaker but you’re still looking for the best picture quality you can get, check out Samsung’s HU8550 series .

and

Quote:
It won’t be available for long, but the $1,300 Samsung 64H5000 is a great choice for gamers, due to its low input lag, great price per inch, and minimal motion blur. It’s only available in that one size, though.

So… I don't know.

Newegg has the plasma for the same price and free shipping but they don't charge you sales tax.  I buy a lot of equipment from them and they are very reputable.

The nice thing is I don't think you will be unhappy with either.  My advice is go with the 4K but its easy for me to spend someone else's money. :-P

Leaning that way.

Disappointing how little wirecutter says about the other choices there. They barely mention it, but they mention it right at the top there. All they say about the plasma is that it's great for gamers, really. :P

Are you a gamer?  My bet is if you don't have a  ps4 or an Xbox1 you won't even notice the difference.  If you're a real gamer you would be into pc gaming (or so Ive been told by my buddy who's the biggest gamer Ive ever met).  I don't know if thats true or not but he seems to think so.  Like I said I don't think you will be unhappy either way.  IMO it comes down to how much you will use it.  If your a big TV watcher (like me) you might as well get the 4K. If you aren't its probably not worth the extra $$$$$$.

4K broadcast is still a few years away but Netflix and some other online sites offer 4K programming.  I also hook it up to my computer and stream video I take with my 4K camera.  I kept my last television 8 years so I hope to get the same out of this one and can't imagine that 8K will gain a real foothold before then.
