HI Guys,  just after advise, opinions on hybrids please. I am Currently upgrading parts of my bag at the moment and looking at slotting in a 5w and replacing my old Dunlop 24deg 5 hybrid.

Now the loft of my Di9 5 iron is 25 degrees so should I look at getting a 25deg hybrid or will a 24degree be ok?

By 4 Hybrid is a 22 degree TM burner and is my go to club so worried 24degree may be too close?

What do you knowledgeable lot think?

Well, right off the bat, it's weird that a 24° hybrid is considered a 5 hybrid. I'd consider that the standard for a 4h. But that's neither here nor there. 5w is generally about even with a 3h (20°-21°).

The thing with what you're trying to do is that you really need to get on a simulator or somewhere you can figure out distances and find something that fills the gap you have. You can't just do this based off of lofts. Loft, CG, shaft length, and face springiness all have a ton to do with what yardage you get from the club. Ideally, you'd go to a store with your existing clubs and figure out what specific yardage you want to fill with your new hybrid and go from there in trying out new clubs to how they fit in. Differences in manufacturers and tech make it really hard to even guess about what you should be looking at just based on loft. If you really want to eyeball it, getting an adjustable hybrid like the Nike Covert Tour (either the original or 2.0) would be great because you can basically turn a 4h into a 3h or a 5h, for instance. And they're pretty cheap now.

I have a 19* 3Hybrid that I carry about the same distance as the 20* 5 wood I used to hit (200-210). My 4hybrid at 22* carries around 190.

I dropped my 3 wood, now aside from driver, I have  3 H 19 degree, and a 4H 22 degree TM hybrids. The 19 fly's lower with more roll out, and the 22 is nice for long par 3's as it gets up much higher, with softer landings.

I would try and fill any yardage gaps you might have for  a certain distance

I carry a 2h thru 6h and do not consider a 5 wood and 5h clubs of equivalent distances.  A well struck 5h off the fairway is about a 165 yard club, which was a decent 5i for me when I was hitting my mid and long irons.  I no longer carry a 5 wood since I hit the hybrids much better, but if I made good contact with a 5 wood it is about 190, which for me is a 3h.   If you can, give the 5W a try before buying and see if it is indeed a 5h replacement for you.

    • It’s possible the graphite shaft has a small internal crack or a delamination. Tapping it and hearing a vibrating sound is usually a sign the shaft isn’t behaving as it should. Since the store wasn’t helpful, consider taking it to a club fitter or a pro shop that can check the shaft flex and integrity. If it’s defective, you might be able to get a replacement from the manufacturer.
    • It’s interesting how much a 3D system changes your understanding. Observing top players in full detail and realizing the trail knee shouldn’t fully extend is a great example of why being open to new info is so important. I like your approach: not trying to be “right,” but trying to teach correctly based on actual evidence. Makes sense why golfers would benefit from this perspective.
    • I would say both are equally not the best for golf. Is it better than nothing, sure.  Golf is an athletic motion. Professional golfers are doing a comprehensive workout routine focusing on strength, power, flexibility, stability. They might include some yoga into the routine. I would put both of them in the recovery bin, not golf enhancement bin.  If you want to increase swing speed, core strength, longevity in golf and life, then lift heavy weights.
