Question regarding hip turn. With weight sliding forward for impact. When should the hips actually start turning?

Driver=  Titleist 913 D2 12 Deg 
Irons 3-P= Titleist 712 AP

So the hips are susposed to turn while your hips slide forward? Slide while turning?

Slide while turning?


Yes. "Linear along a circle." But you may or may not need to "feel" one of the things. You might turn automatically, for example.

Yeah I get what you are saying. I turn fine but now need to get my weight forward. I was thinking of using an alignment stick about a fist length away from my hip.

@iacas , since you already popped in here, what happens if the hips are somewhat closed at impact? Not literally closed to the target line, but just not as open as they ought to be?

@iacas, since you already popped in here, what happens if the hips are somewhat closed at impact? Not literally closed to the target line, but just not as open as they ought to be?

Think of it this way, if the hips need to be open at impact and the hands need to be inline with the club shaft. Your goal is to make contact. If not getting the weight forward and/or keeping the hips closed, what does that do? It shuts everything down. If your hips do not continue to turn then your torso slows down. That causes the shoulders to slow down and the arms to slow down. This usually causes a flip since you can't get proper extension of the arms and torso at impact.

If you put an alignment stick through your front belt loops you can get a good visual of what your hips are doing. You'll look like an idiot (speaking from personal experience :-D ) but you'll be better able to monitor what is going on.

A great training aid for weight forward is the Crush-it . I sometimes use the though/feel of pushing down HARD on a footswitch with my lead foot to at the start of the downswing but again, effective feels vary by player.

40° open is tour average. But even on Tour you have golfers a bit more closed than that and, say, Jim Furyk who are more open at impact.

I know that sounds like a non-answer, but… it depends on a few things, and may not be your priority piece.

    • First going to spain for a long weekend in March probably going to play La Quinta, Los Arqueros and Fina Cortesin, and first week in May will compete in the Crawsnest Tassie at Carnoustie golf links, that will be a full week of golf golf golf and more golf. Did play it last year for the first time and it is awesome.
    • Scrubs is coming back to ABC. February 25.
    • Day 47: simulator day! Played St. Andrew’s and shot a +1. Not bad, especially with having to putt at this simulator set up. Had about 5 minutes at the end to work on some feels as well. 
    • I think you're saying it's preposterous to think that the areas on this club are anything like what's shown here: 30mm toward the toe or heel loses only 5% distance? Highly, highly doubtful. So a guy who hits the ball there and normally hits the ball about 250… will hit it instead about 238. By missing the sweet spot by about 1.2 inches? Highly, highly doubtful. Heck, the high heel barely gets into the red, and orange is only "up to" 10%! @M2R, I've never heard of "Ask Golf Nut" but I'm dubious of his claims in the video and really, really dubious of what's on his site: "Why AskGolfNut Is the Most Trusted Data-Driven Golf Resource". Hmmmmmm.
    • Day 151 1-11 flow work today. I've been doing all pause work, so Inwanted to get some rhythm going. Recorded.
