Quote:

Tom Watson opened the 79th Masters with 1-under 71 but followed with 81 to miss the cut. Despite those first-round thrills, Watson, who won two green jackets in his career, says his next visit to play Augusta National might be his last.

A fatigued Watson says at the RBC Heritage on Saturday that it’s getting more difficult for him to compete on the PGA Tour and he didn’t know how much longer he wanted to take away a spot in events from younger players.

That’s what prompted Watson, who captained the 2014 U.S. Ryder Cup team, to say the 2016 Masters “may be my last.”

He hasn't made the cut at Augusta since 2010. If he feels it's time, I'm sure he will get a good farewell.

He can play Augusta as long as he wants and that will never take a spot away from another player. That said, kudos to him for calling it quits on his own terms. I've always been amazed at how well Watson has continues to play, even into his 60s

Was thinking the other about the all-time best ballstriker.......Watson was the first name I thought of..

Of the players I've seen in my lifetime- I'd say this is accurate. His putting cost him a few majors but his ball striking is as good as anyone's. He picks the ball so cleanly off the ground it's amazing.

I'm sure this has contributed greatly to his longevity.

Watson is actively playing and doing well on the Senior Tour - so he should continue as long as he's not embarrassing his legacy with high 80s, 90s like some of the players did before the "letter".

Funny thing is if this year's Open was at Turnberry and the winds were up, he'd still have just as good a shot as any to win that thing. The guy can still play with the young guns on courses that don't give advantage to length (such as Turnbery 2009).
