  1. 1. Would you be comfortable playing golf with a stranger who you knew was carrying a loaded revolver in their bag?

    • Yes. I am perfectly comfortable with that
      50
    • No. I would ask to be placed in a different group.

    • Maybe. I would take my first impression of them and use that as a guide.

The fallacy in all this is that a responsible CCW person would not show his piece, ever.     It just isn't done.    If somebody shows their gun, especially to a stranger, that's a huge red flag, and I as a CCW holder would excuse myself from that foursome, every time.

There's nothing in the OP that says the player showed you their gun. The entire premise is borderline ridiculous.

How many golf courses allow weapons on the grounds? I'm willing to bet that insurance rates are higher for courses that do not have a "no firearms" policy.

With Munis, your going to be stuck with the local or state laws. Fortunately, I live in a sane state that still allows local government to set laws barring firearms from public parks (and golf courses).

The true fallacy is that a "responsible CCW person" would find it ness essay to carry his or her piece onto a golf course in the first place. Lets be realistic here. Exactly how often is it that golfers are attacked by gun wielding maniacs stumbling out of the woods along the 6th fairway? Even in that situation, you are already at a significant disadvantage because your weapon is zipped up inside your golf bag. You'd probably have as much cance of success pulling out the 7 iron and whacking him upside the head (or is that a wedge shot?).

I have seen a lot of people lose their cool pretty quickly on the course and this led to some stupid actions.

So no. There is no need for it on the course.

You contradict yourself. Your assumption is that the person in the OP is the one "losing his cool", when it could easily be someone else, and the OP may be in a better position to defend himself and others from a threat.

Why do I keep seeing Jack T. Ripper pulling a ma duece out of his golf bag while muttering about "precious bodily fluids?"

I find it odd that currently a majority (albeit slight) would actually play golf with someone that flashes their gun.  Loaded or unloaded it makes no difference.  You always assume it's loaded for safety.

The thing I find odd though is that if the situation were the same but at a different location, say a shopping mall, would you think the same thing?  How could you feel safe with a total stranger that flashes their gun at a golf course or someplace else?  My point is this, a gun escalates the situation, much like any weapon would especially if the need really doesn't call for it.  Safe or not safe the situation would set off all sort of danger signals.  If your supposed playing partner had a gun and you didn't would you feel safer because he had a gun and you didn't? Or does that mean you both have to be carrying in order to feel safe?

Somehow the logic escapes me.  Now before you send me up in flames..... honestly how would that be any safer than crossing the street?  Or worse still, would you allow you child to play golf with a stranger brandishing a gun?  Maybe golf hunting for golf balls?  But won't that affect the pace of play?  (I am being sarcastic here.)

I find it odd that you have to use such loaded words like flash and brandish, none of which were in the OP scenario.   It gives the impression of an agenda.

The true fallacy is that a "responsible CCW person" would find it ness essay to carry his or her piece onto a golf course in the first place.

Right.  Because we always know what places are safe and which are not.  I bet those folks in the movie theater shot up by the Joker character thought THAT was a safe place.  Then there are the gun-free zones which make people feel like they are safe while making them vulnerable.  Like schools.  And Universities.  And churches.

All of which have been attacked.

I wonder what magic feature golf courses have that makes them "safe" in an intrinsically unsafe world?

But then again, what the hell do I know?

First off that is not a contradiction.

Secondly, it is your assumption that the person in the OP is the not the one loosing "his" cool, when in fact it is possible!

Regardless, if either golfer looses his cool chances are both have golf clubs in their hands.

We have all seen golf bring people to irrational behavior, from tirades to throwing clubs, to smashing up a green with a putter.

For argument sake if someone can get that mad and wants to fire a few rounds into a tree or green what is to stop them? Oh it is probably because gun owners are responsible and would never do that!

I have yet to hear a valid reason for bringing a gun on a course as described in the OP.

You might as well pack some heat when going to a school play or kids soccer game or the grocery store, you might have to to defend yourself there aswell. But yet we dont, why?

At least on the course you have 10 iron stick to use for defense!

Another perfect example of arguments based on complete ignorance of those who choose to carry a concealed weapon for personal protection, and the laws for doing so. Other than in those places prohibited by law (which vary from state to state) there are millions of us who do just that...

What magic feature of a concealed weapon makes you "safe?" You are at greater risk of suicide than you are for death by a gun. And if you own a gun, your risk of suicide is higher than for non gun owners.

Thank you! :-D By the way, it's somewhat late to the party, but even Illinois now requires that a person who requests a concealed carry permit must be issued one. How cool is that?! :-)

another assumption on your part. You assume I am making this argument as someone who does not carry a concealed weapon, when in fact you are ignorant on the matter.

if there is any ignorance in the "carrying a gun makes me safe" argument, it is the idea that only a gun will be able to keep you safe. it is the idea that when confronted only a firearm will protect you.

We gun owners always assume the worst.

When was the last time you needed your firearm at the course?

at the park?  at the grocery store.

Then again you live in Florida, which is basically the modern day wild west!

Not at all. It's your statements that so clearly demonstrate your ignorance on the subject. No assumptions at all. And I don't mean for the term "ignorance" to be taken as mean or hurtful. It's simply a lack of knowledge about a given subject. There are a lot of subjects of which I'm ignorant, and readily admit my ignorance, realizing how obvious it is to others. Likely including some subjects of which you are very knowledgeable. This ain't one of them though. ;-)

LOL! You're living in the right place for you though. One of only 6 states in the entire United States that only allow for a permit to be issued. They don't require it.

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
