Does a player have to stand to the side while putting or can they stand anywhere they wish?  For example... Could a person stand behind the ball facing the hole and put the ball?

If I'm understanding your example correctly, the answer is no. Rule 16-1 e. Standing Astride or on Line of Putt The player must not make a stroke on the putting green from a stance astride, or with either foot touching, the line of putt or an extension of that line behind the ball. Welcome to the forum, it's good to have you!

I agree with David.  If I remember correctly, this rule came about due to Sam Snead.  As he was getting older, he tried putting croquet-style, and had some success.  After the rule change, he still faced the hole, but with both feet on the same side.

David's right, schwitz.  Read more here, about what some have called 'golf dumbest rule'.

Sorry, i can offer little but orthodoxy regarding putting styles or equipment.

Just to add, the rule was specifically adopted because of Sam Snead.  It is intended to prevent using this type of stance while putting.  It is not however, so restrictive that it prohibits or penalizes a player from occasionally standing astride an extension of his line of putt in order to avoid stepping on a players line.

John

    • Day 6: Worked on my putting stroke by hitting putts using only my right hand.
    • I've got pretty big hands but I've also felt the challenge of ensuring the grip is in the fingers resulting in a not on purpose stronger grip. I've been making some swing changes that was resulting in the natural feeling at impact being a closed face. My grip has always been fairly strong. Not trying to sound like an asshole or anything, but the answer for me at least was just to start taking the grip from a weaker starting point! I have a pretty ingrained hand and wrist setup when I take my grip. I just started turning the club to have an open face when I start my getting the grip in the pinky routine. Has been working nicely. Lets me have the grip in my fingers and achieve a more neutral grip.
    • @dennyjonesand I are planning to stay in the Poland, OH area Friday night.  If any want to get together for dinner and/or drinks let us know. We are not sure exactly where we will stay or what time we will get there but if we can hook up with any of you it would be fun.
    • Yes, this was a competition for local golf professionals, so I knew he was at minimum a pretty competent player.  I also asked what kind of shot he needed to play, if he had wanted to go steeply down it could have altered my thinking.  But he needed a pretty level angle of attack to get the ball up, and have it stop near the hole.  Given those factors, and the depth of the grate below the ball, there really was no possibility that the grate would interfere with his swing.
