I guess that I am too simple.

Did the ball go where I intended it to when I lined up the swing? Then it was a good shot.

Did not go where I intended and it still worked out? Then it was a lucky shot.

I pretty much just grip it and rip it.  If I were to hit it within 2' of the pin and someone said "great shot", I'd just say thanks and act like I did it on purpose.  But my handicap is like 1000, so......

Any intentional shot that is a success and helps you score is a good one to me. Memorable shot I witnessed was a fade around a big tree, from a bad lie 180yds out, onto the green.

At my regular Wednesday outing, I presented this question to my best golf buddy.  Here is what we decided...

A good shot is one that ends up where you wanted it to go, regardless of how it got there.

A good swing is one where you execute your fundamentals and strike the ball in the middle of the club face and on line to your target, regardless of where the ball finishes.

It depends on how much I'm playing.  When I'm playing often (3+ times per month), I consider a good shot one that stayed at least somewhat online with my intended target.  Someone said within about 10 yards of their intended line.  That's about right for me.

When I'm not playing very often (1-2 times per month or less), I consider a good shot one that didn't end up in a hazard or in any trouble.

If someone says 'good shot' to me... I'll always thank them, even if I'm not necessarily happy with the result.

I have a bad habit of saying something too early, when the ball is in the air, and then it can hit the ground and get an odd bounce or something and people get upset.  I've been on the receiving end of that and I laugh it off.  It's not something they said to me or my ball that made it end up where it did... it's a combination of where/how I hit it and some form of luck.

Shrug...

Good point, and not sure if this is correct but I thought: good_shot = function(good_swing, good_contact, good_flight, closeness_to_target) ?

I agree with those who say, a good shot is one that does what I intend for it to do.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
    • Once, on a course in Middleton, Massachusetts that I used to love but has since closed down,  I hit the wrong half of a huge, UK style double green.  Then I made the hundred foot putt.  Tough to  forget that one.
    • No. But if I can still play next year, I'll almost certainly be even worse. That's the reality of not being young.🙁
