I hear people talking about this all the time. googles definition sounded weird so im sure it was the wrong thihg.

What amount of skill does it take to work a ball? or to put back spin on a ball with an iron?

Step 1: know what causes the ball to do what it does http://thesandtrap.com/b/playing_tips/ball_flight_laws Step 2: recognize that even the best golfers in the world, when they're playing at their best, play their typical ball flight for the vast majority of their shots. It's worth knowing and practicing, for example, how to hit a low hook or a low fade, because those can help get you out of trouble better than a pitch out can.

And then, if the first two replies weren't enough, gear effect comes into play.

Yeah check out that shaping the ball thread.

Every shot has some amount of spin on it. "Green stopping" spin is just a result of hitting the ball solid with some speed. If you're asking about actually backing the ball up, then it's hitting the ball solid with some speed with wedges/short irons on soft/receptive greens or off slopes. You won't see many balls spinning back this week.

    • Why?  You would never be waiting on me.  I am one of the fastest players you will ever run into on the golf course.  I am extremely fit and almost always the first to the green and the first to the next tee box.  When I play with my 16 year old step son who is a 3 handicap, he tells me to slow down.  Also,  what does it take me?  40 seconds round trip to walk off 30 yards?  (which is the max I walk off)  I like to have a look at the break around the hole which helps me to hole out chips which I did for birdie from 27 yards just the other day.  I also do this while waiting on my playing partners to catch up to me so you need not worry about being irritated, I can pretty much guarantee you that you could not keep up with me on the golf course.  🙂
