I do have a swing thread! It's on the first page of the swing forum, too. I've only been playing golf for a short time, but many members of my family play, and my grandfather was definitely the best player in the entire family. So I'm in a unique position of coming into golf with a wealth of terminology and little playing experience, heh. :) Would love to hear how you get along with your swing! I'm fighting a little bit of a flip still (though it's gotten much better in a short amount of time after I got my 'aha!' Feel and committed to it), as well as a chicken wing that I can definitely feel in my elbow. Try not to get too sick if you decide to watch any of my swing videos. ;)

Well thanks for coming on this thread and I will go follow yours as well.

Well these swing changes paid off big time today. I played the most difficult course I've played (maybe tied with another one I played a month ago in a tournament) and I had the best ball striking day ice ever had on a course. My shots we largely crisp and accurate, every club. I even hit a 3 wood off the deck 230 up hill gripped down a little to within about 8 feet through an extremely narrow window (I wouldn't have taken the shot normally due to the extreme difficulty but I really wanted to practice the new swing). My score was bleh because, strangely enough, I took two 10's.

Don't tempt the golf gods, and be cautious of thinking "you've got it" or "you've made the changes." You're still very, very, very likely to slip back into your old habits the instant you stop giving the changes your full attention.

Thanks for that. I hear you loud and clear. And I certainly wasn't perfect by any means. It's just so cool to see changes starting to "work." Thanks again for your help. I know I have a LONG way to go and a lifetime of trying to get better. And yes, those golf gods always seem to be putting me in my place lol.

The one thing about these swing adjustments that I'm a little disappointed with is that in the past when I would make good contact with my driver I was basically guaranteed 280ish whereas yesterday the GPS was putting me at about 260/265 on well struck drives. I think the bowed left wrist was giving me extra whip through my swing. I am much more accurate now so I'm not going back obviously but I will definitely have to figure out how to regain some club head speed at least on my drives. At first my irons were shorter as well but now they are about where they were before the change and a little longer with the short irons actually. I think the short irons are going a little longer due to the fact that I am hitting them crisply more often now.

Could also just be that when you're not thinking about it so much you swing faster. Everyone tends to lose clubhead speed when they're "thinking" about the swing a little bit. People tend to be a little tentative. Confidence breeds speed.

I think you are spot on with that. I have to really concentrate on not cupping and the swing thought basically controls my entire swing right now. Maybe when it's second nature I will be able to let it rip more. Thanks for the post.

Erik is spot on. I was tentative with my drive and couldn't hit it over 200. Now I'm more confident with it and I'm getting much better distance.

    • My two cents? Don't. As a beginner that's interested in learning about the golf swing, you'll find yourself consuming a lot of information, most of which isn't even relevant to your own swing. You need to learn you can't think your way to a good golf swing. Focus on the one thing that you're working on and doing that on every swing, come what may. And remember, mishits happen.
    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.
    • No! lol. But they have to be in the right sequence to play mid-handicap golf or little better. Mostly. And even in that there is range/margin for error in the motions and positions that most normal humans can handle. It helps if you have a decent idea of how a golf club moves around the body like you would any other equipment sports (baseball and hockey might be the closest) After all, fairways are 40 yards wide. Don't overthink it. Be diligent in getting basics right. I will concede that it is harder than it sounds but it certainly is not exact angle/exact position/exact degree of bend/exact speed/exact facial expression, etc, every.... single.... time or the result is horrible death.
    • Looking to play in the Severna Park Golf league and it got rained out the first three weeks. I know the course is being renovated so it is not in great shape but the location is easy for me and I would love to meet some other golfers in my area. Anyone here in Maryland Annapolis area?
    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
