I have played with an Adams Idea a3 19 degree Hybrid for a few years now which has been my "go to" club in my bag. However, only recently I discovered that my Taylor Made SpeedBlade 5 iron goes just as far but is straighter and much more consistent. The 4 iron is obviously longer but also less consistent. I've been playing driver, 5 irons, wedge/short iron on the long holes. I sometimes use my Taylor made rocket ballz 3 wood off the fairway which travels much further than then 5 iron but again less consistent. So, I want to find a club that bridges the distance gap between the 5 iron and the three wood that is easy to hit. I would have thought a hybrid would be the answer but I just don't understand why I only hit the current hybrid the same distance as the five iron. Any ideas???

Well stock specs say the 5i Speedblade has 23* loft, which is nearly the same loft as my 3 iron. My 19* hybrid goes a good ways further on average than my 3i. So I speculate you are either not making good contact, or the Speedblade just has a hot face and the Adams not so much.

Just to be sure, you are playing it like an iron? Ball roughly in the middle of your stance with some shaft lean.

If so, just can the Adams and get a Taylormade SLDR (or Jetspeed) hybrid like mine. It can be bombed.

Not sure that I really have an answer for you, but with my new set of TM AeroBurner irons, I chose to go with the 4 and 5 irons rather than the hybrids which are also available to fill out the set because I hit the irons so much better.  I haven't had a 4 iron in my bag in ten years, and haven't hit the 5 iron consistently in at least that long, so I had two hybrids.  Now the hybrids are sitting in the garage with my old irons and I'm only carrying 13 clubs because I can't figure out where I'd need a 14th - maybe a 7W for hitting out of crap lies in the rough, but I'm totally undecided on that.

Thanks, I'm a decent ball striker .. I will try it a little further back, I may have got into a bad habit there ... I will also try the TM SLDR ... At the end of the day, I'm playing very solid 130 yards in, so maybe I can just rely on th consistency of the five iron to stay in play and score. Thanks for the responses :-D

What you might do is try a 5W or a 7W.

Also, get launch monitor data on your 4i. If your 4i consistency is tied to iffy launch height, you might try softstepping it.

One of the higher-lofted FWs and a soft-stepped 4i might be a good bridge combo.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I use a 5w between 4i and 3w. Hit it much better than any hybrids I've tried - I just seem to prefer hitting a wood to a hybrid. I hit the 3w under control though so I take that confidence to the 5w- might be that just choosing a different model of hybrid solves your problem.

Exactly. Until you find the right club, swing, alignment, whatever it may be... Take what you do well and make it work for you.
