Ping G30s or Mizuno JPX 850s?

Looking to get a fairly affordable iron set custom fit. I play off of 19 and have a pretty solid iron game. I have heard that the G30s are too forgiving and have weird loft/length gaps and force you to change your swing, whereas the JPX 850s seem less focused on GI with distance and feel in mind. However, I have also read people who have described the G30 as a great set. I hit a 7 about 150-160 and a 6 160-170.

Where did you hear that about the G30s? I've never heard of "too forgiving" in irons and I definitely have had no issues with the club gapping whatsoever.

Posters in this thread said that Ping's encouragement for them to swing easy was messing up their swing and something about artificial distance due to length and loft that I didn't really understand. I am assuming you game the G30s, have you tried any other comparable irons?

I only read briefly through the OP, but the to the two things you brought up:

1. Getting maximum energy transfer without having to swing harder can be a good thing. Many people swing harder (instead of faster) in a foolish attempt to hit the ball farther and end up swinging slower, not to mention all of the problems that arise from their swing mechanics. Better to swing easier and hit the sweetspot more consistently.
2. People overstate the amount of distance gain from small increases in shaft length. We're talking about 1/4-1/2" only. Loft is also not the only factor in determining how far a club goes, but people insist on believing it is. I hit my 50° G30 GW farther than my 50° Apex II PW and the G30 is significantly more forgiving.

I played with them for over a year. They're not in my bag anymore for a few reasons, but they are excellent clubs. I've tried comparable irons, but only at stores and demos, so I don't have nearly as much experience with them as I do the G30s.

Yeah check out @billchao 's review. Both are good irons and the G30's won't change your swing. They're not "too forgiving", especially if you're 19.

I play the 850's forged,from 5I thru GW. The look & feel to me are wonderful. The sweet spot delivers the "click" sound when hit just oh so right. I would suggest going thru the mizuno DNA fitting as well.

Also, does anyone have any opinions on the Ping g30 vs i25 vs i? Will the i series be too unforgiving for my handicap?

I have broadened my choice and I was wondering whether the Titleist AP1s are as forgiving as something like the G30s or the Callaway XRs. Thanks.

Can not speak to the mizunos as I am left handed. But I can tell you that g30s are a great club. You will also want to give call away and TM a good look. The ping I series is good too. You would do well to go swing them or get fitted.

I have the 850s. When I got fitted I tried out everything from the g30s, ap1s, rsi's, etc.. In the end I liked the 850s a bit more than the others though not by much. These days most clubs are so similar in stats and performance that what you come down to is preference on looks/sound/"feel" of the club. I don't think you could go wrong getting either set. Just give both a shot and see which ones you like best.
